Many times a hard drive controller board goes bad, not
the drive itself. If you can locate an exact duplicate
model of the drive that is failing you can very simply
remove the board swap it with the new one. You can often
find the older drives on ebay. This generally does not
work with the drives that are 'clanking' or making other
loud physical noises. In those cases the platters will
have to be removed by a professional in a clean chamber
and moved to another drive.

If the problem is software then you can put it into
another computer as a slave and copy the data that way.
If the data is destroyed so badly that you cannot read it
you will be hard pressed to find anything that will get
the data back into a readable state.
