I am running Norton Internet Security on my machine. On or about 10am on
1/22/07 I got a message from Norton that I needed to update my virus
definitions. I did so using their Live Update.

At the end of the update I was told to restart my computer. I initiated the
restart process and walked away from my machine.

When I came back to my machine the screen was blue and there was a DOS or
cmd window open and it was deleting files from c:\Documents and
Settings\Steve. I was very confused but could see the word "delete" in the
script and quickly closed the window. The machine proceeded to boot up as
normal.

However, when it was running again a bunch of icons were missing from the
desktop and I could not use Outlook.

I attempted a System Restore but when the computer restarted after the
restore the same thing happened. This time I was at the machine and
immediately killed the DOS window.

I ran a full system scan to check my computer for viruses and it says it is
clean. I also ran the system scan from the Norton website and my system is
supposedly clean of viruses.

I have done nothing since yesterday as I tried in vain to get through to
Norton. I thought I would try Microsoft as this may be a problem with
Windows.

Welcome to the "victims of Norton" club.

Go to http://housecall.trendmicro.com and do a complete online scan of
your computer.

(Amongst the many misdeeds that Norton inflicts on its victims is that
System Restore will not work properly).

Good luck
