SFC /scannow asks for XP Pro, won't accept CD

I'm using WinXP Home Edition with all updates.

When I try: START>>RUN>>SFC /scannow

a "Windows File Protection" window pops up with the message "Files that are
required for Windows to run properly must be copied to the DLL Cache.
Insert your Windows XP Professional CD-ROM now." RETRY, More Info, CANCEL.

My questions:
1) Why is it asking for XP Pro? I own XP Home!
2) Even though I insert the XP Upgrade CD and hit RETRY, it keeps asking for
it over and over.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions on how to get SFC to complete
properly!

Put the CD in place before hitting run. Worked for me.

Thanks for the reply, but that didn't help. What I did learn, however, is
that by repeatedly pressing the RETRY button, I was able to get the SFC
progress bar to complete...

It took about ~100 presses of the RETRY button on various "Windows File
Protection" prompts for the Windows XP "Home CD", "Professional CD", and
"Whistler CD". When the SFC progress bar finally got to the end, there was
no completion message or "success" message from SFC. Strange. Maybe my
CD drive-letter changed from the time of the initial install? Surely this
can't be the intended way for SFC to run.

There is a known issue with this in XP.

1. Sometimes repeatedly selecting the Retry option will eventually cause it to run normally.

2. If no joy, insert your XP CD in the and let it startup. When you see the XP
menu, click on "Exit" (at the lower left corner). Now open Start/Run and type SFC /SCANNOW.

3. If not, the installation path to the CD may have been changed.

To reset the Installation Path;

a. The easiest way is to use the TweakUI PowerToy. Start TweakUI and go to My Computer/Special Folders/Installation Path. Click on the Change button and make sure the path points to the CD Drive.

TweakUI is available with the Windows XP Powertoys from
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp

b. The other option is to manually edit the registry for the installation path in these 2 Keys..

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Setup
Double click the Source Path value and change it to point to the CD Drive.

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\Current Version - Source Path

Ronnie-thanks for the help-that solved the problem.
(I had to use the Registry Method; for some reason, just using TweakUI
wouldn't preserve the "installation path setting"--even though I selected
the new path and hit APPLY+OK, it would always change back to the wrong
path. Manually editing the registry in the 2 locations you suggested below
worked. (While I was there, I also changed the value for
ServicePackSourcePack too.

Hopefully this will be fixed in XP SP1?

Your most welcome, glad this solved the problem.

No idea why TweakUI would not work with this?

Thanks for this post, which solved the same problem for me. Any idea why a
full installation would be needing files added to the dll cache 2 days after
the install?
