cd -rw problem

i am having trouble with the drive reading some disks my dvd rom does not
read any type of disk and the cd rw will read some and not others if i burn a
disk it will not read the disk afterwards but another computer will this is
the message i get from the event viewer Details

Explanation
This problem is typically caused by a failing cable that connects the drive
to the computer.


User Action
Replace the cable.

my question is does it matter if i use a 40 pin 40 wire ide cable or a 40
pin 80 wire ide cable? thanks for any help

ok then how would i tell which type of cable is being used now/ is the cable
with black connectors 40 wire or 80 wire?

Could be either. I think they tried to mainstream black for older cables but
that's pretty much gone the wayside as u can get 80 pin with black
connections. For the most part though, the drive failing to communicate
doesn't matter if it's 40 or 80 pin. Replace the cable and see what happens.
It's a cheap fix and take about 20 seconds to do. Any cable u buy today
will be 80 pin, so no need to worry about that.
