Setting Up New XP Network

I'm about to link three Dell computers, all running XP,
via a home Ethernet network. Internet connection via
cable; PCI Ethernet cards for each computer. Any advice
about what brands of modem and router to buy? I've heard,
for instance, that XP supports only a Motorola cable
modem, or at least that some other brands are incompatible
with XP. I've also heard that XP can disagree with some
brands of router. Thanks much for helping out a new
networker. . . .
