In using the "add printer" function, I can set up a
printer on the LPT parrallel port just fine. When I try
to set up the same type of printer using a shared printer
on a NT4.0 SP6 machine, I get the error message that the
driver is not compatible. The local driver works, the
NT4.0 driver works, using the "browse" function, XP sees
the remote printer fine, but it will not set up.

I also tried going into the properties on the local
printer and adding a network port (the one found by XP)
and I then get an error that the path is invalid.

Any suggestions?

Your last approach is the one I like most.

Install the proper driver locally--as though the printer were on LPT1.

then try to change the port, using the syntax
\\ntservername\printersharename.

You could also at a cmd prompt try the syntax:

net use lpt1: \\ntservername\printersharename <enter>

This should succeed eventually if you get names and authentication
credentials right--and then you might succeed in changing the port.
