I just installed Win XP Home to dual boot with Win 98.
Under Win 98, I have no problems with network Neighborhood
seeing my three computers and I can get into the internet
with Verizon DSL thru a hub. When I boot into Win XP, the
Linksys network card is recognized but I cannot connect to
my network and the internet. This is driving me nuts! My
workgroup is correct and I am using TCP/IP with
autodetect. Can someone offer any suggestions? Phil

I've written a web site that should help you solve the problem:

Windows XP Network Troubleshooting
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/troubleshoot

Pay particular attention to the sections on firewalls (disable and
un-install while troubleshooting), protocols (use only one),
and NetBIOS over TCP/IP (enable it).

First of all... interesting site, Steve.

Second, having browsed your site and followed any
pertinent advise, can I add my problem to this thread?

I have 3 desktops and 1 laptop all running XP connected
through a hub and with cable internet provided by a USB
connection off computer #1 which is, of course, shared.

After a problem with one of the comps (#4) I ended up
with 2 d/tops able to see each other (#1 & #2) and both
having internet access. The other d/top (#3) and the
l/top (#4) could also see each other but neither had
internet access.

#3's operator did a System Restore and was back on both
the network and the internet.

With #4 I traced the problem to the IP address and no
gateway being listed. Fixed that and #4 had network
access but no internet access. Because it is a laptop it
also has a dial-up connection on it and nothing would
persuade it to use the shared internet access through the
network. It insisted on using the DUN.

Finally I deleted the DUN and suddenly #4 could connect
to MSN Messenger... but could not pick-up e-mail from
another account using Outlook nor could IE browse the web.

I have spent over 15 hours on this and am stumped. Do I
reinstall XP and see if that fixes everything or is there
something very simple that I am overlooking here? I tried
a System Restore but it didn't help.

I just can't figure it out. #4 connects over the network
fine - and at a good speed - Windows Messenger signs in
quickly and works... but IE6 refuses to browse anywhere,
Outlook XP can't pick up mail and software that has
an "auto-update" facility also reports no connection to
the 'net. I have assigned the IP, subnet mask and default
gateway and enabled netbios. All 4 comps talk to each
other quickly, 3 of them have good internet access, it's
just #4 that can't browse the web.

Anyone have any ideas? Please?

Hi

I had a similar problem, but instead of deleting the dialup connection, I
just set IE to use the LAN connection Always...

Tools Menu/Internet Options/Connections -- then in the middle of the dialog
box, choose Never dial a connection.

That fixed it, when nothing else would. Interestingly enough, if I then
connected via dialup manually, I could still connect & IE worked over the
dialup connection too.

Go figure. Hope that helps.
