File sharing w/windows 98

LAN is peer to Peer, xp pro is host and shares files, clients are win 98 2nd
and another xp home. After installation of sp2, files cannot be accessed by
clients after being changed by worker who uses xp pro workstation. If
clients originate the file and save it to the xp pro workstation they are
able to access the file until the xp pro user changes the file. Does that
make sense? I hope so. Anyone out there able to solve this problem yet? xp
pro workstation has windows firewall turned off. However other clients are
running zone alarm and the xp home client is running windows firewall and
zone alarm. We are behind the dsl router with firewall and nat.

What exact error are you getting / observation are you making when "files cannot
be accessed by clients"?

Is the XP "server" (yes, we all know that there is no "XP Server" OS) running
Simple or Advanced File Sharing? It sounds to me like the ACL / ownership of
the files being changed is changing to the XP Pro local user. You could confirm
that by looking at the ACL for one or more files before and after changing each
file.

Look at Properties for one of the folders in question, Security - Advanced. See
what is changing as a result of editing by the local user.

BTW, try to make all posts in one thread - multiple threads just make it harder
for everybody to follow the discussion about your problem.

Error message varies, somtimes it's:
No more connections can be made to this remote computer at this time because
there are already as many connections as this computer can accept.

Another one is
You are not authorized to access this file (not exact wording but close)

I do not have access to the computers right now, I will add more tomorrow
re: ACL file settings.

Also, we have AOL broadband and Norton AV coporate edition. Clients are set
up to update individually.

The "No more connections" is a Windows XP connections limit - has nothing to do
with your previously reported problem:

The "...not authorised to access..." message, if it's truly predictably
reproducable, per your original report, could be very interesting. Please post
back as soon as convenient, preferably in this thread.
