how do I name the artist???

Do you mean to say "how do I add the name of an artist to a music file in
Windows Media Player"? Or are you talking about another piece of software or
file type?

Do you know the name of the artist, or do you need to look it up?

Look ill make this as clear as I can:
I want to arange my songs by artist in a windows xp folder(just normal)but
some of my songs dont have artist names. I want to find a way to name the

Very very vague is putting it mildly. I believe he wants/needs to edit
the songs to add the artist. Rightclick the individual song and click
Properties. Then click the Summary tab where you can edit each song
to add information. I hope this will help, if not, I don't understand your
questions either.

OK except the summary page is greyed out and won't allow me to add any
information...how do I get access (remove the grey)

rick has a point there you cant type anything there. oh and by the way uyou
figured out what I wanted to kno so dont worry but as rick said its in grey.

I have also figured out a way to do that but I think there might be a easyer
way. But if u want to know how i did it?

here it is: First you have to have real player. 2nd inpot the song into the
library. 3rd right click on it and say edit info or something. and last fill
it in. but there has to be another way im sure u can figure it out.

If the files are read-only or have damaged file headers than you can't edit
them.

Real Player or Windows Media Player or iTunes or any of dozens of music file
tag editors you can download from the net will allow you to fill in this
information. Not all will support all file types.

I tried the Real Audio tag editor, it works as long as you are in RA, but it
doesn't edit the properties of the actual WAV file, still greyed out....
there must be a switch somewhere to allow us to get into the properties..the
file is NOT read only and there are NO damaged file headers....

I don't think there is a standard for storing ID3 tags in WAV files, and I
doubt that it would ever be created since most WAV-editing software would be
confused by it.

uhhh guys HAve just found somthing that suprised me..alot I kno how to fix
this.
all you need to do is click on properties, then on Attributes take off read
only so its not hidden and not read only then go into summery and you can
edit it. YAY!
