I've been trying to install this update for several weeks now and each time
it simply says that the update was not installed. I've even tried
installing it in safe mode; all to no avail.

Any ideas please?

Hi Tony,
There are a few reasons for this failure, it usually has to do with
having a key or keys on your keyboard re-mapped, which creates a
Registry entry that causes this update to fail. See here for details
and fixes:

http://msmvps.com/blogs/bradley/archive/2012/05/09/kb2686509-repeatedly-fails-with-error-code-0x8007f0f4-fixed.aspx

If that doesn't help see the fixes here:

Thank you so much Glen. I followed the link and then downloaded the hotfix
from
http://www.vivus.net/dl/ and it worked a treat.
