Problems with Winsock provider catalog

I am trying to help a disabled user with a Dell Dimension 2400 series
running XP who cannot connect to the internet. She keeps getting the
message "Problems with Winsock provider catalog".

When the option to fix the problem comes up, she selects the option and then
restarts her computer but she continues to get the same error message as
above.
I believe the problem resulted from spyware on her computer. I have removed
the spyware.

When I searched the internet, I find solutions but they require her to
download the solutions to her computer. She can't get to the internet so
can't download them.

Any help with this problem would be greatly appreciated.

Have her execute in a Command Prompt:

netsh int ip reset
netsh winsock reset

Then reboot her PC.

Thanks very much for your response and your direction.

I entered netsh int ip reset and hit enter.

The following appeared: Initialization function inithe1perdll in
ipmontr.dell failed to start with error code 11003. One or more essential
parameters were not entered. Verify the required parameters and reenter
them. The syntax supplied for this command is not valid. Etc.

Then I entered netsh winsock reset.

I got a similar error code 11003.

But then it said:Successfully reset the winsock catalog.

So I rebooted but still couldn't get on the internet.

What did I do wrong?

The correct syntax is
netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt

I successfully downloaded the software to my PC and have it loaded on her PC
but I can't remember how to get to the Administrator Sign on screen as
required for this software. I have seen the screen in the past but tonight,
I can't figure out how to get back to it.

Thanks again for your help.

It worked! I finally got an answer as to how to sign on as an administrator
and used a couple of different software downloads to fix the problem and one
of them worked and so she now has access to the internet. Thanks!

My pc is doing the same thing, do you know what program you used to fix
the problem? i am running a Dell XPS 400 I have ran a Registry cleaner
program called REGCURE. I have tried the commands in the command line
(netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt and netsh winsock reset). I do not know
what else to do. i thought maybe my ethernet card went bad so i just
purchased a new one i am waiting on it. if someone knows how to fix it
please let me know so i can return the ethernet card before i install
it.
Thank you

Since you quoted nothing, I have no idea what problem you are talking
about. Be aware that the vBulletin USENET gateway is nothing but a
company that leeches messages from the Windows newsgroup, where I, and
most of us here are.

I strongly recommend that you stay far away from all such awful web
interfaces to participate in this newsgroup--they are the slowest,
clunkiest, most error-prone methods of using the newsgroups there are.
Do yourself a favor and switch to a newsreader, such as Outlook
Express, which comes with Windows XP, or Windows Mail, which comes
with Vista. See
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/outlookexpressnewreader.htm

> i am running a Dell XPS 400 I have ran a Registry cleaner

I also strongly recommend that you stay far away from all Registry
Cleaners. Registry cleaning programs are *all* snake oil. Cleaning of
the registry isn't needed and is dangerous. Leave the registry alone
and don't use any registry cleaner. Despite what many people think,
and what vendors of registry cleaning software try to convince you of,
having unused registry entries doesn't really hurt you.

The risk of a serious problem caused by a registry cleaner erroneously
removing an entry you need is far greater than any potential benefit
it may have.

Sorry, the problem i am having is i can not get connected to the
internet. When i try it says the page can not be displayed. When i run
the diagnostic tool it says Windows detected a problem with the winsock
provider catalog. it says resetting it should fix the problem so i tell
it to reset it then it tells me to restart the computer. Once i restart
the computer the same thing happens. Its like my computer is not
configuring or establishing any tcp/ip settings. Thank you

Here are a few things to try:

Open Internet Options, Connections tab, click "Lan Settings" button,
deselect all.

Flush DNS

Click Start, Run, type CMD and click the [OK] button. Type each of the
following:

IPConfig /FlushDNS [Press Enter key]
ipconfig /release [Press Enter key]
ipconfig /renew [Press Enter key]
ipconfig /registerdns [Press Enter key]

NETSH

Click Start, Run, type CMD and click the [OK] button. Type the following:

netsh winsock reset

Press Enter key

Restart the system

You can also try this software download from a working machine:

LSP-Fix

I realy appreciate your help. i tried everything you said and when i
type the ipconfig commands it just says: "An internal error occurred:
The request is not supported. Please contact Microsoft Product Support
Services for further help. Additional information: Unable to query host
name." Now when I did the winsock commands there was no error message
but i am still having the same problem. I also downloaded the program
you said and it said that no errors were found. Please let me know if
there is anything else i can do or try. I ordered a new ethernet card
and it should be here tomorrow do you think that will work? When i
contacted my ISP they said that they were not receiving a signal that my
modem was connected to my computer, so what i did was connected it
directly to my laptop and then they did get a signal so they told me my
ethernet card was probably bad. I just didnt think so because i never
had a problem before my internet always worked, but now im starting to
think that maybe i need a new one.

Thank you for all your help and if there is anything else you think i
can try please let me know.

Thanks again,
Corey Daly

If a restart of the computer gets the ethernet card (NIC) to work, try this:

Open Device Manager, open the properties on your ethernet card, click
the Power tab, and deselect "Allow the computer to turn off this device
to save power".

You can do the same thing with a USB device by disabling the power
saving feature of all "USB Root Hub" entries.

If you can email or post to newsgroups, or PING sites, the problem isn't
with the NIC.

Seriously?

The post the OP quoted from (even the sorry synchronized service they used):
http://forums.techarena.in/windows-xp-support/924680.htm

Another location:
http://help.wugnet.com/Problems-Winsock-provider-catalogftopic-607459-days0-orderasc-16.html

Note: Both show you posting what the OP partially quoted in your reply
starting with the sentence, "Print these out, this is from MS" and ending
with the sentence, "Restart the computer." ;-)

Google Groups archived the March 2, 2008 original posting (when the
conversation started) and your May 5, 2009 (one day after someone else
tacked onto the over one year old (then) conversation) response that
included the quote from the new OP (Jonny_S) whose badly formed/lack of
actual quoted text post is at least partially caused by their horrible
choice in interfaces at TECHARENA.IN.

Perhaps all the confusion (on your part and on the part of Jonny_S) will
disappear once someone looks at said Google Groups full conversation
(including the full instructions you posted):
http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.windowsxp.help_and_support/browse_frm/thread/b4b548fc26d49140/
... which should allow you to figure out what they are asking and maybe they
will figure out what is going on if your post was even relevant the day it
was posted and the new OPs issue is even close to the same as the 2+ year
old original posting or 1+ year old tacked on posting.

Maybe. Maybe not. Only time and ability will determine the outcome. ;-)

@ Real Truth - you did post that so you're forgiven for it being a
little ambiguous.

After about 3 hours of trying trying trying to outsmart and get past and
figure out why even though it said "you are connected" and not being
connected, I did a system reset. Yay!

Up and running and on line and all is good (except that strange factory
desktop photo!)

Thank you all.
