I hadn't checked it prior to SP2 (although it created a restore point during
SP2 installation) but I noticed that my system restore was not running. When
I go into SYSTEM to make sure it is turned on I get an error saying that an
error occurred while trying to run
"C:\windows\system32\shell32.dll,control_rundll","C:\windows\system32\sysdm.cpl"
and the only option is to click okay which closes the error dialog. What
could be the problem?

Try this, insert XP CD, go to Start > Run >type in "cmd" and at the prompt
type "SFC -SCANNOW". This commands windows to verify it's system files and
repair or replace them if bad or missing.

Jon, thanks, I tried that but it made no difference. Still get the error when
I try to start up system restore. When I closed the dialog, this time I got
another dialog about running a DLL as an APP error. Then closing that, got a
Dr. Watson Post Mortem message saying it had to close. I am baffled!

I found this while googling groups for
""C:\windows\system32\shell32.dll,control_rundll","C:\windows\system32\sysdm.cpl"
"
"Please follow these steps to reinstall the System Restore function.

1. Click Start, click Control Panel, switch to Classic View and
double-click Folder
Options.

2. Under the View tab, click to check "Show hidden files and folders", and
uncheck
"Hide protected operating system files", click Ok.

3. Launch Explorer or double-click My Computer, locate to C:\Windows\inf,
right-click on SR (SR.inf) and select install.

4. If the system requests the XP CD, please insert the CD into CD-ROM and
finish
the installation according to the instructions.

I hope this helps."

Hope it helps :)

Kelly suggests the following to reinstall System Restore. I could not get
SR to reinstall by using the 'SR.INF' file but it installed without problem
from the CD.

Is the Service started? In the meantime:

1. Insert the Windows XP CD
2. Click Start/Run and type:
"rundll32.exe advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection C:\Windows\Inf\sr.inf"

System Restore core files should be reinstalled.

Alternately, you may also open Windows Explorer, navigate to
"C:\Windows\Inf" folder and right-click sr.inf (choose Install)

Jon, thanks again. I did that procedure and now my System Restore is running.
The first thing I did was create a restore point! Sony support warned me to
back up my important files and have my Recovery CDs handy. I'm glad this
worked instead. Thanks.

Edward, thanks for the suggestion. I think yours was basically the same as
Jon's. But I'm still glad guys like you are out here helping we less
knowledgable folks.
