My problem started about 4 weeks ago.
When I turned on my computer first thing in the morning it started to
FREEZE.
It used to FREEZE when it got to the Desktop, then after about 2 weeks
it started to FREEZE before that when it reached the Windows screen and
the Progress meter. I switched off the computer using the "ON" & "OFF"
switch, left it for a couple of minutes, and then switched it back on
again. The computer started as normal and I did not have any problems
again that day.
Now for the last couple of days, after turning the computer "OFF" and
then back "ON" again, the initial screen shows grey writing on a black
background and says, "Computer starting in Normal Mode in x seconds". I
do not do anything, the clock counts down, and it loads as it should
do. I have NO further problems for the rest of the day.
I have had Norton AntiVirus for the last 4 years and when I ran a scan
( with all definitions upto date ) it says that there are NO viruses.
The only downloads have been Windows Updates.
I am using Windows XP Home.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks in advance.
All the Best.
Paul

I will download the ...
http://snipurl.com/jcl9
... from Microsoft tonight so it will become active in the morning.
This is because I have restarted my computer on numerous occasions over
the kast 4 weeks and have had NO problems within the days after the
initial FREEZING first thing. I have also turned "OFF" my computer for
a few hours and then turned it back "ON" again within the same day,
also without any problems. The problem I am having is ONLY when I first
turn it on in the morning.
Thanks again.
All the Best.

A description of the Safe Mode Boot options in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;315222
Keep tapping the F8 key during start-up. It is an irritant. I have a
boot menu delay of 5 seconds to enable me to choose how I want the
computer to boot. If you can't manage the F8 method come back.

I will do the tapping F8 key during start-up in the morning when I
first turn the computer on, as this seems to be the only time this
problem occurs. I will then select "Enable Boot Logging", press
"Enter", and when the "Boot Menu" appears, and the words "Safe Mode"
appear in "Blue" at the bottom, I will select start in "Normal Mode"
and press "Enter".
Does this sound OK to you.
Thanks very much for your time on this.
I will let you know what happens.
I think I may have confused you. You should:
Keep tapping F8 key during start-up.
The screen will stop and display a List of Options from which you make a
selection. Item 1 on the List is Safe Mode but you should NOT select
that option. Further down the List is "Enable Boot Logging". Using your
keyboard enter the number before "Enable Boot Logging". The computer
will then recommence the boot recording in the log and finish with the
Desktop displayed and running in Normal Mode.
Using Windows Explorer you will find ntbtlog.txt, which will / should
open with Notepad. Select File, Save As and name the file BootLog. This
will place the file in My Documents leaving the original safe. Next
delete all lines where the Driver has loaded to leave only those lines
which begin "Did not load driver" and save the file. Copy the list in a
further post here.
I have just gone through this proced ure on my own computer, except I
copied the content of ntbtlog.txt into Word. This is the result I got:
Service Pack 211 2 2005 00:07:30.500

Thank you VERY much for the detailed explanation.
I did as you suggested this morning.
I kept pressing the F8 key until the menu came up. I had to use the
arrow keys to move upto the "Enable Boot Logging" and then pressed
"Enter". It took me to another screen with "Enable Boot
Logging" in Blue at the bottom and asked me which installation I
wanted to start, I selected the only one I have got ( Windows XP Home )
and pressed "Enter". It then started to load.
The strange thing is, it loaded ALL the way this morning WITHOUT
FREEZING, the first time for weeks.
Anyway, I saved the "ntbtlog.txt" as "BootLog.txt" AND as
"BootLog.doc", just to be sure.
I shave stripped out the lines that said "Did Not Load Driver" and
am left with the list below.
Service Pack 111 3 2005 08:27:00.500

this morning somehow stopped the FREEZING.

After what seemed to be good yesterday in respect to "Enable Boot
Logging" and then it did NOT FREEZE, this morning when I turned on the
computer, I just got a BLACK screen, it did NOT even get pass stage
one. I pushed the "ON" & "OFF" button for several seconds to turn it
"OFF", left it a minute or two, and then turned it back "ON". I got the
screen that said, "Load Windows Normally", I pressed enter and it
loaded WITHOUT FREEZING. This is driving me "NUTS". Have you got any
suggestions please?.
I think I will leave the computer turned on over night tonight.
Thanks in advance.

A new development.
My Norton is scheduled to run on a Friday night at 8.00 pm, last night,
it did NOT run.
I have had Norton AntiVirus2002 since 2001 and have NEVER had any
trouble with it it.
Here is the Norton line for the scheduled task entry :-
C:\PROGR~1\NORTON~1\NAVW32.exe/task:C:\DOCUME~1\ALLUSE~1\APPLIC~\Symantec\NORTON~1\Tasks\mycomp.sca
Any Advice or Help will be greatly appreciated.

I tried running Norton the way you suggested and nothing happened. It
still says as it did last night "Could NOT Run".
Sorry to be a bit thick, but what do you mean by click on Advanced and
select View Log please.
Yesterday I tried the "Enable Boot Log" again to see if that made any
difference but the computer FROZE before it got to the Desktop.
Try Start, All Programs, Accessories,System Tools, Scheduled Tasks,
Advanced, View Log.
What do you have set up for protection in terms of a Firewall and anti
spyware?

The reason I mentioned the fact that the scheduled task did NOT run as
normal is because I thought that it might have something to do with the
current problem.
Are you saying that this might me a contributing factor?, if NOT, I
would ideally like to have the system running OK and then I could sort
out NORTON.
I have the LAN through XP Firewalled AND the IPS through Telewest ( UK
) Firewalled.

I am going to leave my computer on as this is the ONLY way at the
moment that I can gurantee that I have access to my files.
I appreciate BIG TIME your perseverance.

Can you run start Norton Anti Virus without using Task Scheduler.
The error code 0x8004130f points to a Task Scheduler problem not a
Norton problem. Have you installed the Windows XP SP2 update?

Thanks for the reply.
Yes I can run Norton without using Task Scheduler.
I have NOT installed Windows XP SP2 update because everybody has said
it is NOT stable. But the funny thing is, when I do Windows Update it
NO longer appears as an option for download.
Thanks in advance.
All the Best.
I would go with installing Windows XP SP2. It gives you much greater
system security. However, it is best installed from the CD. Contact
Microsoft for a free disk.
Contact point and System Requirements:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/sp2/cdorder/en_us/default.mspx
We seem to have been side tracked from resolving the freeze problem!
Try right clicking the My Computer icon on the Desktop and selecting
Hardware, Device Manager. Look for yellow question marks and advise
details of any found.
When you get a freeze are there any subsequent error messages? Post
details.
What Error Reports (if any) are there in Event Viewer in the System
Section? Post copies where the Event Type is error.
You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools,
Event Viewer.
When researching the meaning of the error, information regarding Event
ID, Source
and Description are important.
HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427&Product=winxp
A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the
error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a button
resembling two
pages. Double click the button and close Event Viewer. Now start your
message
(email) and do a paste into the body of the message. This will paste the
info from the
Event Viewer Error Report complete with links into the message. Make
sure this is
the first paste after exiting from Event Viewer.
Another possibility is spyware activity.
When dealing with a persistent virus / trojan you need to delete system
restore points and not use them as they will contain the virus and put
it back into your system. Turn off System Restore until cleaning is
finished. Also run your anti-virus with updated definitions in safe
mode. Sometimes you need to run an anti-virus from a floppy and Trend
offer one that can be used.
Create a new folder named Sysclean (e.g., C:\Program files\Sysclean, or
just a desktop folder).
Download Sysclean.com (http://www.trendmicro.com/download/dcs.asp) and
place it in this folder.
Download the latest Controlled Pattern Release zip
(http://www.trendmicro.com/download/pattern.asp, e.g., lpt123.zip) and
extract its contents to the same folder. See the Readme text file for
additional instructions.
Delete Temporary Internet Files (IE Tools>Internet Options>General)
accepting the option to delete all offline content. Reboot and delete
contents of all TEMP folders and then your Recycle Bin.
Close all running programs including your anti-virus application, go
offline, and run Sysclean. For best results, do nothing with the machine
until the scan completes.
If the scan shows any infections in System Restore files and you're
running WinXP, create a new Restore Point
(Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore), then delete
all but the most recent Restore Point (Start>Programs>Accessories>System
Tools>Disk Cleanup>More options).
Work through the spyware removal programmes etc in turn in safe mode
until you get no results.
Afterwards, update your own anti-virus application and perform another
full system scan.
Finally run HijackThis and post the HijackThis log to the HijackThis
forum here:
http://aumha.net/
You will need to register with Aumha to be able to post.

The post by Leythos reminds me that the computer needs to be clear of
viruses and malware before installing Windows XP SP2 to get the right
result.

I have ordered the CD from Microsoft as you suggested.
I right clicked "My Computer" and selected "Hardware" &
"Device Manager", clicked ALL the "+" signs and there were NO
"Yellow" question marks.
After the Initial FREEZING and then restarting my computer there are NO
subsequent "ERROR" messages.

All the Error Reports are no more recent than August 2005. Aren't there
any from the last week? Are there any entries of any Event Type being
logged when you reboot?

or service was still using the registry during log off. The memory used
by the user's registry has not been freed. The registry will be
unloaded when it is no longer in use.
This is often caused by services running as a user account, try
configuring the services to run in either the LocalService or
NetworkService account.

I am wondering whether your computer is overheating.
This freeware programme is excellent for getting information about your
computer:
Everest Home Edition is an interesting (freeware) source of information:
http://www.lavalys.hu/index.php
Download and install it. A sub-folder of "Computer" named Sensor
provides this sort of information:

Can you post your details leaving out those relating to voltage.
If you place the cursor on Sensor and select Quick Report, Plain Text
you can copy and paste the details into your message.

Hope this helps.

Who is the manufacturer of your hard disk?
Spyware causes many problems. If not installed download Adaware and / or
update Reference file
from http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/ and use it to remove
parasites.

Have you tried to isolate the OS, (don't know what OS you are using) but the
first thing to check would be the pc itself.
Try booting with a Startup floppy (preferably a WinMe start-up disk as it's
the most comprehensive) and let it run to the Help page. Scroll up & down
the screen (using the arrow keys) and keep it running for a few hours if
necessary. If the pc still freezes, then the OS AND the HDD can be
eliminated from the likely causes.
See how it behaves and come back with the results and we can take it from
there.

NOTHING HAPPENS--so why ask me for information?
It is the lack of SERVICE that annoys one
This newsgroup is not Microsoft. Many of those who read newsgroups are
interested in helping others with computer problems find solutions. If
you don't post information how can anyone start to help you? You're
shooting yourself in the foot!

I could NOT find the sort of report like yours.
Did my Last Post Help at All?.
The Manufacturer of my Hard Disk is Samsung, it is a Samsung SV3002H.
The Driver Version is 5.1.2535.0.
The Driver Date is 01/07/2001.
The Driver Provider is Microsoft.
I Bought my Computer from Tiny Computers in the UK back in 2001. They
NO Longer Exist.
Hi Mart,
Thanks for the Interest.
My computer ONLY freezes when I initially turn it on in the morning. It
takes anything from one to maybe four attempts to get it to load to the
desktop and NOT freeze. After that I have NO problems for the rest of
the day, even when I restart my computer after doing a Windows Update.
When it does freeze first thing in the morning it is NOT always in the
same place, which is odd. That is why I don't think it is an
overheating problem.
I am using Windows XP Home Edition with Service Pack 1 ( SP2 on Order
from Microsoft ).
I do NOT have any Startup floppies to boot from. My system is an OEM.
Thanks in Advance.
All the Best.
Paul
Did you try out this suggestion:
Spyware causes many problems. If not installed download Adaware and / or
update Reference file
from http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/ and use it to remove
parasites.
I have another suggestion. I have been testing HD Tune. (freeware).
Download and run it and see
what it turns up.
http://www.hdtune.com/
Select the Health tab and then double click the two page icon ( copy to
Clipboard ) and copy into a further message.
Next click on the Error Scan tab and start the Scan. It will take some
time, depending on the size of the disk. The tool has a good visual
display so that you can see how the scan is progressing.

Hope this helps.

Paul, sorry I wasn't able to help but should you need to go down that route
at some future time, you can download an image of WinMe Startup Disk and
make one for yourself from www.bootdisk.com (be sure to read the
instructions) and use the OEM version.
Good luck and I hope you soon resolve the problem.

1: You say you have had Nortons for a number of years. It sounds like
you are still running the old version (even if you have the latest
signatures).
How about a second opinion? Uninstall Nortons, and download AVG from
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/lng/us/tpl/v5 - it is reputable and
(smile) free, and do a full scan of all drives.
2: Did AdAware show any infestations? Even with the latest version?
3: The symptoms of your system freezing after being shut down for a
while, and starting well afterwards sound like the battery on your
motherboard that keeps the settings alive during power down may be on
its last legs. It is usually a CR2032 or CR2025 lithium 3volt battery
cell. Check your motherboard manual or have a peek in the box for the
exact model. Buy a fresh one from the chemist (they are very cheap and
common), restart your computer and take careful written notes of *all
*the settings in BIOS (usually accessed by pressing the DEL key during
startup before Windows starts). The notes will come in handy when you
remove the old battery (make sure the power is off when you do this)
and slip the new one in its place, as you will have to re-enter them
back in as they are lost during battery replacement. Make sure the
replacement battery goes in the same way up as the old one went out
unless you want an expensive doorstop.
These batteries can last for anything from six months to ten years,
depending on the heat and power stresses applied. Cheap and quick to
replace, they have solved a many 'hard to start' type problems over the
years for my customers.
4: Seriously consider updating to XP SP2 - there are numerous hidden
patches and fixes that improve system stability and security. If there
were major problems early in the release cycle, they have certainly
been resolved and patched in the 15 months since it was released. As a
byproduct, any missing or corrupt system files, drivers and registry
settings will most likely be updated and fixed during the update
process. The download is about 70Mb or pay the few bucks to Microsoft
for a disc in the post. Don't forget to ask at your local electrical
retailer (the local Harvey Norman, Retravision and Dick Smith types) if
they have a spare Microsoft SP2 update disk lying in the back cupboard
somewhere - Microsoft distributed boxes of them to most retailers last
year to give away to their customers - and you may get lucky.
Please tell us if these ideas helped.
Good luck!

confuzzled
I checked my Norton AntiVirus 2002 was upto date with the latest
definitions and run a "FULL" Scan. There were NO Viruses found.
I downloaded Microsoft Windows AntiSpyware ( Beta ) and ran a "DEEP"
Scan. There were NO Infections.
I have not downloaded HD Tune yet. How is the testing going?.
Do you still recommend me downloading ...
http://www.hdtune.com/
Do you still recommend me downloading Adaware from ...
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/
... and using it to remove parasites.
Thanks VERY much for your ongoing help. It is appreciated.
Hi Mart,
Thanks for your help.
As I said previously I am using Windows XP Home Edition with Service
Pack 1 ( SP2 on Order from Microsoft ).
If I need to go down that route at some future time I will use your
suggestions.
Hi confuzzled,
Thanks for your informative suggestions, I will keep them in mind.
Thanks to you all.
All the Best.
Paul
