Autoplay? How?

I recently upgraded to XP Pro from Windows 98 and since then, have lost
my AutoPlay functions. I've got a Pioneer DVD drive and an NEC CDROM
drive, and neither of these will auto start when I insert any type of a
program, music, or DVD disk.

I went into My Computer, right-clicked on the respective drives, and
under "Properties" -> "AutoPlay" tab, I selected the proper software
actions for each of the file/media types (yes, I did remember to hit
"Apply", "OK").

I then downloaded Powertoys and in TweakUI, I made sure that "Play
audio/data CD's automatically" was checked off. Still, nothing happens
when I place a disc in either drive.

I can read and execute files from music CD's, data CD's, program CD's,
and DVD movies in any of these drives; it's only AutoPlay that doesn't
work.

Any thoughts,

Thanks

Mark,

When I used regedit to check the key referenced below, I saw that it was
entered on my system as a binary value, rather than dword:

NoDriveTypeAutoRun REG_BINARY 91 00 00 00

Nonetheless, I deleted my key, added the one suggested by you below,
however it had no effect on my missing AutoPlay feature. I subsequently
reverted back to my registry.

Thanks anyways, any other thoughts?

Mark

Start, Run and enter REGEDIT

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdrom]

"Autorun" = dword:0x00000001

Go to start/run, and type GPEDIT.MSC.

Go to Computer Configuration, Administrative Templates, System

find the item "Turn Off Autoplay"

Mark, I appreciate your patience and persistence, however this is
becoming more frustrating than I thought. As for your two suggestions,
my registry setting was was already set up as you had suggested in your
first recommendation, and as far as your second one, "Turn Off
AutoPlay" was set as "Not Configured" by default. I tried changing back
and forth between "Disable", "Enable", and back to "Not Configured"
while rebooting in between. No such luck.

What's particularly frustrating for me is that AutoPlay was working fine
for all of my drives in Windows 98, and the only thing different between
then and now is that I upgraded to XP Pro. Ever since this upgrade, I've
been unable to figure out how to get AutoPlay.

"My Computer" still gives me this option when I right-click on the
AutoPlay options for each or my drives, but after I hit "Apply", I still
don't get AutoPlay (no error messages pop up).

Whenever I insert the music data, or program CD or DVD, I briefly see my
cursor become an hourglass on the screen and then when I think a program
is going to load, the cursor turns back to an arrow and nothing happens.

I can read individual files and play them separately with my software,
but I can't play a continuous music CD or DVD. I have to go to each
individual track, and execute them separately .

I don't know this has anything at all to do with this and it probably
doesn't, but since upgrading, I've also been unable to install any
program disks with *.cab files on them. XP can't find them. In order to
install these programs, I have to copy the entire disk to my hardrive
and execute the install from there (it still recognizes the disk in the
drive, it just can't find any *.cab files). As I just stated, this may
very well have nothing at all to do with my AutoPlay problem, but if it
does I want to get as much info to you and others as well to hopefully
get out of this dilemma.

Thanks again,
Mark

I think it likely that you have some CD app installed that needs updating for XP.
It could also be a driver problem. It's hard to guess. The upgrade has carried
some setting up with it.

I would create a dual boot with a clean install of XP. The FastWiz can make
that relatively painless. (need to also reinstall all apps)

I am having a similar problem with XP Home edition. Autoplay refuses to work
with any of the settings from the drive properties. However, unlike MC Win
Media player will play an entire CD and my DVD rom has no problem playing a
complete disc.
I have discovered that the problem on my machine is restricted to my user
profile. A second profile on the machine does not have this problem.
Any help would be most appreciated. Thanks.

PS I checked in the reply to MC but the registry settings to change have
been garbled (at least on my viewer) could someone restate them? Thanks in
advance.

Mark, thanks. I took your advice and tried something I should have done
from the onset. I loaded XP selectively without the drivers and startup
program and sure enough, you were right, it's a problem with a startup
app.

Using MSCONFIG, I was able to narrow the problem down. By disabling
"Plug and Play" under the "Services" tab, I regained my AutoPlay
function; by enabling it (default), I was able to reproduce the problem.

I don't know if this helps you or any others out there, but I can keep
it disabled for now. Anybody know if there' a reason or fix?

Thanks,
Mark
