Hey all, I am thinking about upgrading my motherboard and was wondering
how it will pan out with my current XP installation. Will I have to
wipe my hard drive and do a fresh install? Or can I just install the
new mobo without going through all that?

"Changing a Motherboard or Moving a Hard Drive with XP Installed"

The short version is that a repair install is the minimum that is usually
required. Some would recommend a clean install, though, to avoid
incompatibilities.

Address scrambled. Replace nkbob with bobkn.

In my experiences, a new install of the OS is best along with compatible
drivers for the new hardware. Bios adjustment may be needed before
installing the OS.

I agree that a clean install may be best. However, for those with quite a
few application installed trying a repair install may be worth it. I
normally do because of the time associated with installing all my
applications after a clean install.

Thanks for the replies, I guess I'll probably end up doing a fresh
install :( What sucks is I just did one about 2 weeks ago because I
got a new hard drive, and I finally got all my apps/games installed.
Guess the second time around should go a bit faster tho...

Be sure to wipe all current partitions on that hard drive. When I say start
anew, I mean exactly that.

It was not too difficult.
1. Backup all data - catastrophes happen.
2. Make sure that you have copies of all the drivers that are needed for
your hardware.
3. Replace motherboard/processor
4. Restart the computer. Assuming that you installed the mobo properly, it
should boot up and go through multiple driver updates. There's a lot of
restarting involved -at some point it instructed me to enter my product
activation key. It didn't accept the key and gave me a telephone number to
call. I spoke with a very nice woman who gave me an obscenely long code to
enter, and all was well.

As I mentioned before, I ran into issues with the hyperthreading component.
Other people have recommended that I do a repair install to correct the
issue, and I'll proceed with that shortly. My biggest headache in the whole
procedure was actually getting the mobo installed - getting windows into a
good place was tedious, but it took care of itself. I noticed that you posted
the same question elsewhere - take the answer that the other guy gave you to
heart. He has some good tips.
