This is the results from "via patch sidewinder". This is a FF2
particular patch, and may not apply to every Sidewinder product.
The second link is an archived copy, since Microsoft removed this
page from their site. This patch also only applies to certain
VIA chipsets.
It helps to use the exact product name when searching, and if the
product names are ambiguous, that can really make it difficult.
This is a list of product names and official end-of-support dates.
SideWinder Force Feedback Racing Wheel USB 12-Aug-1998 30-Sep-2006 Not Applicable
SideWinder Force Feedback Racing Wheel Gameport 13-Aug-1997 30-Oct-2002 Not Applicable
Also, you can find threads on the private forums about this stuff.
Even if you had version 4 of the software, chances are everything
would not work right. I didn't read the whole thing...

uninstall the SideWinder software version 4.0 and then you just go to
Control Panel > Game Controllers > Add > Microsoft SideWinder (Auto Detect) >
OK. Then check in Properties that the wheel's working ok. Using the built-in
drivers, the pedals will be set to split-axis (each pedal is it's own
independant axis) and you can't change it (so if the game doesn't like
split-axis...). The default with the SideWinder software 3.0 is
combined/single axis.

Do you have a motherboard with the Via chipset on? If so, you will need a
patch for the software to work. Google for it.
