I use an external USB hard drive to which I back up my computers using
Acronis True Image software.

On one older laptop, Acronis TrueImage takes literally forever "analyzing"
the partition on my USB external hard drive before letting me proceed
further. Acronis support has said there was no way to exclude the external
HD from the analysis and suggested the solution could be disabling the
"Distributed Link Tracking Client service (TrkWks)".

My question: is it dangerous to disable the Distributed Link Tracking Client
service (TrkWks)? What am I giving up with other programs or in general in
XP if I disable this service? What use is this service in fact and does this
make sense?

Thanks.

Jeff

*Microsoft Service Description*: Maintains links between NTFS files
within a computer or across computers in a network domain.

When you start the Services applet in “Start -> Control Panel ->
Administrative Tools”, the “Startup Type” setting for the “Distributed
Link Tracking Client” service may be set to “Automatic” or “Manual”.
Modify the system registry settings to disable the “Distributed Link
Tracking Client” service in Windows.
The “Distributed Link Tracking Client” service helps maintain links
between NTFS files within a computer or across computers in a network
domain. This service is for users who are in a domain that have
distributed links and a NTFS file system. If these conditions do not
apply to your system, disable this service to speed up the system
boot.

So i think it is not dangerous to disable this service when you run
Acronis.
