The bits service starts and runs fine. But when I try to
stop it, i get error 1053: The service did not respond to
the start or control request in a timely fashion.

The dependancies are workstation and rpc, and it is bits
2.0.

When I get the 1053 error, the service remains
as "stopping" until I restart the machine.

Any ideas how to resolve this.

It also does this if i uninstall the update for this
too...

Thanks in advance

The first link is for issues before sp1 for xp. I have
sp1 and ALL critical patches.
I have also tried all the tips listed on the second link
and still no joy.

Anymore ideas would be welcome

Thanks

Do you have its Startup type on Automatic or on Manual? I think it
better to have it Manual - if needed it will then start (eg for Auto
Update) and this might correct the problem of trying to Stop it
