Never tried RegEdit before.
Anxiously followed instructions.

Everything fine until I got to....

"Set the Data of this value to 1"

Just couldn't see how to do this and was reluctant to experiment. Can
somebody help?

Now may not be the time to learn Regedit.
I suggest you use a .reg file already done for the purpose.

http://patch-info.de/WinXP/Downloads/KB908531_Share-To-Web.zip

Unzip it, extract the .reg file to a folder, right-click it and select
Merge and confirm when asked.

I'm surprised, Alan. Did you subscribe to German newsgroups? ;)

Hi Detlev

No, I don't but I did have contact with Ottmar Freudenberger in
another group. He was the first one I knew of with the .reg file on a
site, so I recommended that (after checking it for correctness).

One of these days I may have time to do my own web site.

Sincere thanks.
German or not I can now "save as" in Excel and "Include Picture" in Front
page again.

To set the data right click the new value that you just entered and a
new window will pop up ...choose to modify and in the new window set
the highlighted value to 1 that is it.

I surely hope that you made a backup copy of
the registry before attempting this. You always make a backup copy
first before editing the registry

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Shell
Extensions\Approved]
"{A4DF5659-0801-4A60-9607-1C48695EFDA9}"=-

The above Reg string is not mentioned by MS in KB918165, yet it was
included by your friend reg file, KB908531_Share-To-Web.reg. Is it
necessary?

If the policy of Only Run Approved Extension is set I'd image it would be.

This setting is designed to ensure that shell extensions can operate on a per-user basis. If you enable this setting, Windows is directed to only run those shell extensions that have either been approved by an administrator or that will not impact other users of the machine.

A shell extension only runs if there is an entry in at least one of the following locations in registry.

For shell extensions that have been approved by the administrator and are available to all users of the computer, there must be an entry at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Shell Extensions\Approved.

For shell extensions to run on a per-user basis, there must be an entry at HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Shell Extensions\Approved.

Thank you for the explanation. I've added the link and info to my

Kurttrail, I have had the same problem as everyone else with my IE not
working properly since the download of KB908531. I do have a HP printer and a
HP Scanner. I was one of the first to make a post on this problem. I am just
a little confused and maybe you can enlighten me on it. I printed off the
information on how to change the registry. What I am confused about is this:
It says to rename the resulting value "{A4DF5659-0801-4A60-9607-1C48695EFDA9}
{000214E6-0000-0000-C000-000000000046} 0x401} I am assuming that this means
to change the first group of alphanumeric number to only the second group of
alphanumeric numbers such as this: {000214E6-0000-0000-C000-000000000046
0x401} Then after doing this right click the value, select modify, and type
"1" into the value data field and then close the registry. This is the way I
read it but it would have been nice for them to place a "to" in between the
above numbesr to simplify a little more. Like in change from this number to
this number. I am further assuming that after I make the change in the
registry I can turn the automatic updates back on. Thanks for your time.

You are supposed to create a *NEW* DWORD value under

"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Shell

Extensions\Cached" and name it:

"{A4DF5659-0801-4A60-9607-1C48695EFDA9}
{000214E6-0000-0000-C000-000000000046} 0x401"

The name is EVERTHING between the quotes, including the spaces, but
excluding the quotation marks, of course. And then you'd set the Data
of this value to 1.

Reboot.

And I wouldn't turn AutoUpdate back on, but if you like the added danger
the unnecessary AutoUpdate code adds to the patching process, then go
ahead, and turn it back on.

But instead of mucking about in the registry, I'd use the zipped up reg
file that Alan gave the link to in this thread.

Kurttrail, Thanks a lot for coming back to my question so quickly. I do
appreciate it. This morning I did more reading on this subject and I decided
to go ahead and make the change to the registry. I backed up the registry to
my desktop, made the change, reinstalled all of the updates again and that
took care of the problems I was having with IE. I appreciate all the good
help I receive from knowledgeable folks on this forum like yourself. Alan,
thank you also.

Yes it is. It removes the Share-To-Web shell extension from the Approved
key cause that's the reason, why verclsid tries to "verify" the Extension
over and over again. The key \Cached is something like a "Whitelist", so
the extensions entered there aren't touched by verclsid.exe. Could you
imagine what will happen, if verclsid.exe checks the registry for entered
extenions with both values beeing present in \Cached and \Approved? ;-(

I informed MS about the unprecise instructions in KB918165 and the
still *faulty* one on the MSRC blog site. Brian replied that they will
fix that, but they didn't yet :-/

Freudi,

Sorry if this question has been answered somewhere. I have googled it
and still cannot find the answer. My company is having a problem with
another piece of software that ties into Internet Explorer. The
software in question is Alternatiff. It is a freeware TIFF viewer.
Anyways, my question is what should I be entering the registry for my
software? This key

"{A4DF5659-0801-4A60-9607-1C48695EFDA9}
{000214E6-0000-0000-C000-000000000046} 0x401

appears to be just related to the HP software in question. If so then
what part of that key to I change? I have the CLSID of Alternatiff, it
is {106E49CF-797A-11D2-81A2-00E02C015623}. But do I use just that part
and put under cached or what? It looks like there are two sets of ID's
entered. So I guess my question is what are those two CLSID's
referencing? Thanks for your help!

Most likely, yes. But I'm *not* sure about that.
