Does anyone have the problem of not being able to change
the recording level of your microphone? In the "Sound and
Audio Devices" properties window, under both the "Audio"
tab and "Voice" tab, the "Advanced" button for both "Sound
recording" and "Voice recording" are grayed out. And it's
my own computer. Any hints from your generous wisdom are
most appreciated.

Open up the sound recorder go to edit, audio properties and make sure you
have a driver showing under preferred device under sound recording.
If you do it sound like either your sound card is bad or your sound driver
has been corrupted. Do you have sound otherwise such as when playing music?
If so I would uninstall and reinstall your sound drivers.

Frank, or anyone,

Thanks for your hint. Unfortunately, uninstalling and
reinstalling the drivers associated with SoundMAX didn't
work. By the way, the only other person I know with XP
has the same problem, even though it's a different brand
(mine is Dell Dimensions 4500). Does your "Advanced"
button work under "Sound recording"?

Hi...
SB Live here and both are grayed out as are yours.

Sounds and Audio Devices Properties - Voice (tab).
Do you have a Test Hardware button?
Click Next in the Wizard...Microphone Test...read
the paragraph...after your done...click Volume under
Recording to adjust (do you have an Advanced button
under Microphone in Record Control...if not...Options -
check Advanced Controls).
Go through the Speaker test...and afterwards you should
be able to adjust your recording / voice levels from
Sounds and Audio Devices Properties - Voice (tab) -
Volume (button).
The slider buttons will have green ends...if you adjust
them from here on out, they'll turn to yellow ends to show
you that you have a custom job going.
