Click in the login box, backspace over "Administrator" and type in your
name. The next time the machine starts your name will be in the login
box.

"Don't Panic"
However, I don't get a login box at startup. My computer goes right into
Windows. That part is fine, it is a home computer so there is no need for a
login box. However, as I mentioned, it starts as Administrator so I have to
change that.

Download TweakUI Power Toys and set it to automatically log in to the
account you want.

Maybe you have some third party software installed that disables the
Welcome screen? Something like PCAnywhere or other vpn programs?

Actually, I just posted back that perhaps you have third-party s/w that
disables the Welcome screen, but on further thought realized that what
gets disabled with programs like pcAnywhere and other vpn's is not the
Welcome screen but Fast User Switching. So I'm sorry, but I don't know
what's going on with your computer. You said it was a home computer, so
I assume you're not logging onto a domain. If its XP Pro, I'd carefully
examine any policies you may have set with gpedit and then perhaps
forgot about.
But I really don't know. Maybe Kelly will have an insight for you. Here

Good luck,
control userpasswords2
I couldn't delete the Admin and instead I deleted the user. That was a HUGE
mistake as the machine wouldn't login even though I didn't have a password
for Administrator. Someone ended up using a DOS or Linux program to change
password for Win XP Pro to get back to the desktop. Not only that, all the
references to the user are gone, like Favourites, Outlook address book,
Outlook emails. What a disaster!
At least now things are more or less back to normal. phew.....
