When I go to Accessories/System Tools, if I choose Defrag I don't get a
window at all. If I choose Free Up Disk Space, the progress bar gets
"stuck" at about 3%. I let it sit for an hour and nothing happens.

Possibly relevant:
1 - When I recently ran all the Spyware tools I could and Avast LOTS of
stuff was found - and cleaned up.
2 - I recently installed Windows XP PRO in a different partition - I
don't know if this problem started before or after that.

Any ideas about what to do?

Go to; start --> run

and enter; dfrg.msc

Does the Defrag utility load ?

Why did install Windows XP PRO in a different partition? Is the computer
dual booting?

Are you short of free disk space?

Have you tried running chkdsk?

Hope this helps.

How much free space you have?
