Does anyone have any tips to optimize XP for performance? I am
running XP as a base OS and running several virtual machines in VMWare
Workstation. I would like to have the base XP OS using as little
resources as is possible to save these for the VM's running.
Thanks for any advice.

In the control panel
advanced tab
set for best performance
also
might as well turn off system restore
Maybe you missed the fact that the OP is running it in a virtual machine
it's easy to just make a spare copy of the entire system prior to
running any experiments
A far better option than System Restore (as an exact clone of the OS is
available)
and one way to squeeze a bit more performance out of the system
Start with "Minimal Install" when you install it, vs typical or custom,
whatever their wording is.

Often you'll find excellent advice on a newsgroup.
Before you use that advice though, consider the
ramifications of it being wrong or even dangerous;
how important IS that to you?
ALWAYS verify and confirm ANY advice from a
newsgroup!
It looked to me like he was running VMs IN XP, and he wanted an XP install
minimized so it left max resources for the VMs? He didn't seem to care as
much about disk space as he did resources being available.
Rereading it, it still feels that way?

Actually, if resources are your only interest, once you've done a minimal
install, you then might want to look at Services and turn off as many as can
be done without. Remote access, telnet, etc. etc. etc..
It sounds like all you want XP to do is support VMs so which services and
background tasks you can do without is well beyond me!

The **base** OS is XP.

yes
indeed I did mis-read
At any rate...my advice to "adjust for best performance"
would make sense in either situation
aagh so I made a fool of myself again
sheesh
my apologies to "unknown"
Thanks for all the advice!

OK
I think you got the general idea
Agreed.
