Hello all...

How do you clear the auto complete in the "Search" functions of Windows XP,
particularly in Searching for files by name and by contained phrases?

I've been trying to keep an eye on my kids as they use the computer and
internet, and am afraid that they'll see how much I've been searching the
computer, if they come across previous searches saved in autocomplete.

I know how to turn it on and off, but I like the functionality of it. I just
need to know how to purge the previous searches from the autocomplete, but
can't find a button or setting to change.

I am referring to the Search you get to by hitting the Start button, and
selecting search.

I tried the Internet Explorer clearing of forms, passwords, etc., but that
doesn't seem to clear the Windows XP search box's autocomplete.

Yes, I know privacy people will say, but we're trying to give the kids the
use of Internet, but staying safe, even if it means doing a little snooping
every once and a while.

Thanks.

Open up IE and then click on "Search". Then type in "a" and you will get a drop-down
list. Place your cursor arrow over the first word or phrase (highlighting it) and hit
your "delete" key. Repeat this process for b through z and the AutoComplete words/phrases
will be deleted from the IE search function.

You can do this in the registry, there might be an easier way i don't know.
Any how the entries in the Search Assistant are stored under.....

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Search Assistant\ACMru

delete all the keys under "ACMru" that have number for a name like "5098"
and so on. but leave the key "ACMru" .

Didn't remove all of them. It seems those terms that were completely
searched remain, while only those where the search was interrupted are
removed. Hmmm. Doesn't make sense to me why there is no place to purge a
search box autocomplete.
