How can I delete filenames so that they can not be recovered

I am annoyed that the filename can still be seen through a file
recovery utility such as Piraform's Recuvera when I have deleted a
file.

I have no qualms about my data really - but am a bit paranoid when I
see my downloaded bank statements can still be made visible after
deletion.

I store my bank statements on an empty partition.
When I finished with them I used eraser to delete the file.
I then formated the partition
I then used ccleaner to clean up the hard drive and wipe free
drivespace.
I then used Norton Utilities v 14 to clean up this partition and wipe
free drivespace again.
I then used Piraform Eraser to wipe free drive space a third time.

Finally I used recuvera and hey presto the file names are still
visible.

Is there any reliable utility which scans for deleted files and erases
the fat entry altogether so that the file does not remain in any form?
I see many utilities advertised out there such as Eraser etc which
claim to wipe free space but nothing out there to actually delete the
fat entry. Is there anyone who has experience of such a utility to
recommend one to me that actually works?

Did you check the status of features on the (Heidi) Eraser forums ?

The only thing I can really think of is to format to a different file
system, and then reformat it back to your original file system. Another
possibility is to use a *disk* wiper, i.e. something that totally wipes
out the partition information along with everything else on the disk.

Also when you have reformatted in the past, did you use a "quick" format
or a full format?

Thanks for This Morning's Smile.
For practical purposes, why not store the DL bank statements
on a _small_ USB flash drive? This would allow you (1) to
remove the drive from any PC or (2) conveniently overwrite
the financial files with pictorial porn or anything convenient.

I've used the Heidi Eraser program, and it seems to work out pretty well for
erasing the filenames (at least as far as several "unerase" programs are
concerned). I do this periodically on another partition as a matter of
record keeping, when I am making several changes to some files, and want to
know what was recently done (or may want to recover), and not obfuscated
with all the other changes that had been made.

Just do a Defragmentation of the drive the file[s] were deleted from
straight afterwards.

As free space is overwritten by re-allocated (moved) data, any deleted
file's space is going to be utilized and therefore that space's old
allocation data will also be overwritten in the process.

I have been concerned by such issues in the past and found (using
"Undelete" software) that all erased file data disappears after a drive has
undergone defragmentation.

I find that worked well for Win98SE using its (or the WinME) defragger, but
not so well for WindowsXP and later (using NTFS). (i.e., you can still find
many of the filenames, even after running its defragger). That's why I
have used Heidi's Eraser on occasions, but only in the fast mode, not the
thorough, time consuming, "overwrite each sector with ones and zeros" mode.

Don't secure file-shredders erase filename data?

I expect so. I don't have a need or use for those, though. No paranoia
over here. :-)

I just use Heidi's Eraser utility to overwrite the unused disk space
directory entries on another partition, simply for my own "record keeping"
activities for various tests on that partition - otherwise it gets too
"clogged" with old spurious entries for me to be of any use. (i.e.,
sometimes I want to know which files were recently erased by me or by a
program install, for example).

eraser does not always remove the filename.
I came across a 30 day product which does do the filename deletion
called Drive Discovery by Notso software but there does not seem to be
a way of purchasing a licence for it as the website is no use. The
product is good though and I am using it until the free period
expires. I would like to purchase this though and if anyone has any
clues i'd be grateful

There is some contact info here. The only bit of value, might
be the phone number. They're supposed to be in the UK. One
press release said they were in Bristol.

If there were trying to make it this difficult, well,
they've succeeded.

Are your sure you're not the author of Recuva? You make it sound
pretty good. I'm glad I dl'd a copy.

Recuva,Recuvera, same thing?
