Hi. I'm looking to install XP (upgrade from Win98SE) on a 266 MHz
Pentium II with 256 MB RAM. I know XP will be slower than 98, but is
performance in such a system "reasonable" for light duty email and
word processing?

Hoping to benefit from someone else's experiance :)

Am running XP RC2 on a P2-400. It runs quite well and is very stable.
Your system would appear to more than meet the minimum requirements of MS on cpu & RAM.

The decision is all yours.  If you see a new pc in the near future, wait for that.
For your present pc, it's more a question of whether all your hardware devices are compatible with XP.   You'd need to cover that first.   Plus you need to have  large enough free disk-space. And also, depending on your motherboard specs & its manufacturer, A. make sure you have latest BIOS.
B. Max out the RAM   (per motherboard's specs & limits)

I had it run on a P166 with 96 mb of ram in the early beta test stages and
it was just about reasonable, with all the new desktop features turned off.
So it should run jus' peachy like that on a machine with your spec as above.
Dunno how the new desktop would run on your machine, I guess you get to try
that one yourself. Seriously, it should handle ok but maybe a little
sluggish with the new desktop, you have a good portion of RAM there which
will help, and I think is probably more important than processor speed in
some ways.

I run with the luna theme on a celeron 300 with 256Mb ram, a PII333 and a
PII300.. It's much better than SE ever was on any of the machines, even
with the new gui.

It will be a little slow, but probably not bad.

I suggest (in you have the hard drive space) that you install it as a dual
boot, so you can use it a while without uninstalling your old OS. (I guess I
should have asked: Were you in on the preview program? Or do you have to go
spend the bucks to try it out?)

In general, I think you won't have any problems with the light duty work you
suggest, especially if you turn off some of the bells, whistles, and
"glitter."

Hmm, then I would guess that a 233 w/ 256 MB RAM would be fine as
well, eh?

The last dinosaur I am going to think about upgrading is a P 200 w/ 96
MB, and a 3 GB HD and a 9 GB SCSI HD.

worth it? It is already running 2000 Pro.

It is definitely worth it.

I am running a p2 266 with 160 megs of ram. WinXP is much better than
Win98se.
With a computer like mine, I know I won't be playing games. Internet
browsing, newsgroup viewing, WP, Excel etc still work great. A new machine
would be nice, but money is tight =(

Until then, this will do fine =)

Of course, make sure you have the latest bios updates for your computer and
also grab all the latest drivers for all your peripherals before you make
the switch (if you do).

Thanks to all folks who responded. I think I'll take the plunge and
do the upgrade!

Update: I installed it to the dinosaur of dinosaurs, and though it is
a bit slow, and the on board video chipset has only 2 Megs to use, it
is still worth it.

Makes the networking a heckuva lot easier.
