There are a couple of folders I store images in and every time I open the
folder it displays as filmstrip view even though time and time again I
change it to thumbnails.

Is there a way I can set a folder to always open up in thumbnail view
instead of filmstrip?

XP's folder views can be a nasty beast. Try resetting it.

1. Open "Folder Options", then the "View" tab.
2. Scroll down and check "Remember each folder's view settings".
3. Click the "Reset All Folders" button.
4. Close Explorer, then restart it and see if it works properly now.

Open the folder and leave it set to filmstrip view.
Go to 'View' --> 'Customise this folder'
change template type for this folder.
If the folder contains sub-folders you want to be the same, tick the
appropriate box.
Click 'OK'
View should change to thumbnails - if it doesn't choose a different
template type.
That setting should now stick for that folder.

If you configured Windows Explorer to not hide protected system files, one
of those would be the desktop.ini file inside the folder that contains
directives on the behaviors of that folder. If you delete a bunch of files
and happen to also select and delete the desktop.ini folder (because it
isn't hidden anymore) then you also deletes the settings contained in that
desktop.ini file for that folder.
