I continue to have problems adding a 2nd hard drive to my system.
Although the drive isn't recognized in WinXP's "My Computer",
Powerquest's Partition Magic 8 recognizes it as a "Type 44" drive.
(This drive was formatted in FAT32 and still contains Windows 98 on
it). I'm starting to think that I need to do some kind of conversion in
Partition Magic in order for XP to "see" it.

Would anyone know of a newsgroup that addresses questions about
Partition Magic 8? Or, better yet, does anyone know what a Type 44
drive is? FWIW, hardware-wise it's the exact same drive as the master
drive that has XP on it. The master drive "type" is properly listed as
NTFS, while the slave drive "type" is listed as "Type 44".

Thanks!

You wouldn't happen to have used Roxio's GoBack on this drive at one time,
would you? I had the same problem. GoBack was installed on my computer,
but I didn't install it after I reformatted my master drive. My slave drive
was then not recognized, though Partition Magic would see it as "Type 44".
After many googles for "type 44", I found a few pages that pointed to GoBack
as the problem - I had to reinstall GoBack, disable it and then uninstall
it - that fixed the problem.

Good luck.

Anne ---

You are the man! err..... Woman! 8-)

Thank You, Thank You, Thank You! Not only did I use Goback on this drive, but I
THINK THAT I STILL HAVE GOBACK INSTALLED ON IT! .....DUH! <sheepish grin>
Sometimes you really can't see the forest for the trees......

Funny, I remembered to uninstall Goback3 from my master (WindowsXP) drive before
installing this slave drive, but I forgot to also uninstall Goback 2 from the
(Win98) slave drive. At least I _think_ that's what happened. I have not had
time to check whether this is the case, but I'm pretty sure that I didn't
uninstall it.

I will report back here when I'm able to check it.

Thanks again!

Powerquest has a knowledge base you can access from their web site:

www.powerquest.com

The only thing they list about "type 44" is that a type 44 partition
is one which is monitored by Roxio Go-Back. PM 8 is not compatible
with Go-Back. This doesn't sound like your problem.

Has that HDD which you're trying to install been formatted with a non
standard controller or possibly one that was not using LBA? Or, was
it formatted using some type of drive overlay program like Maxiblast?

If PM 8.0 can't "see" it as FAT-32, it's probably not going to work in
your XP machine unless you re-format it.

Actually, CS, Goback probably _IS_ my problem. (See my response to Anne).
But thanks for the response. I guess that there's no real need for a
Partition Magic newsgroup, as it's pretty straightforward to use -- unless
you do something stupid, like I did! 8-)

Thanks again!

Well, I checked and that's exactly what was wrong. I uninstalled Goback, and now XP
sees the drive. After chkdsking it, I re-installed Goback (Version 3 this time) on
both drives, and I am back in business.

Thanks, again!
