MS Word only opens in Safe Mode

windows updates are installed and current.
Since doing so Word will only open in safe mode, Ive tried reinstalling xp
office and used repair and detect but still have the problem.
Any advice would be appreciated.

Here you select the Discard my customized settings and restore default
settings check box during the operation.

You did not say what the actual problem is, i.e. what happens
when you attempt to launch MS Word in normal mode. Also:
Are your copies of Windows and MS Office legal or perhaps
not quite?

Yes my copies of XP Home & XP Office Professional 2002 are legal. I have had
no problems launching them in the past (before reformatting my drive
yesterday)
When Word Opens a box appears saying Microsoft Word has encountered a
problem and needs to close, sorry for the inconvenience.
Then a box pops up - Word failed to start correctly last time. Starting word
in safe mode .........
Do you want to start Word in safe mode ?
Any help would be appreciated.

Microsoft Office Safe Mode allows you to safely use an Office program that
has encountered certain startup problems. When a problem is detected at
startup, Office either fixes the problem or isolates it, allowing the
program to start successfully.
Automated safe mode
During startup, Office checks for problems such as an add-in or extension
that won't start, or a corrupted resource, file, registry, or template. A
message is displayed the next time the program is started, identifying the
problem and asking if you want to disable the part of the program that has a
problem.
A list of disabled items is accessible through the Disabled Items dialog box
(About Microsoft <program>, Help menu). You can use this dialog box to
enable the listed items. Enabling some items may require you to reload or
reinstall an add-in program or reopen a file. Enabling an item does not
necessarily fix the root problem; an item that you enable may be placed back
on the disabled list the next time you start the program.
User-initiated safe mode
You can open any Office program in Office Safe Mode by pressing CTRL while
you start the program or by using the /safe option when you start the
program from the command line.
The following restrictions apply when you open a program in user-initiated
Office Safe Mode. (Some items listed below do not apply to all Office
programs.)
* No templates (template: A file or files that contain the structure and
tools for shaping such elements as the style and page layout of finished
files. For example, Word templates can shape a single document, and
FrontPage templates can shape an entire Web site.) can be saved.
* In Microsoft FrontPage, the last used Web site is not opened.
* The Office Assistant is not automatically displayed.
* Toolbar or command bar customizations are not loaded and customizations
cannot be saved.
* The AutoCorrect list is not loaded and changes are not saved.
* Recovered documents are not automatically opened.
* Smart tags (smart tags: Data recognized and labeled as a particular type.
For example, a person name or the name of a recent Microsoft Outlook e-mail
message recipient is a type of data that can be recognized and labeled with
a smart tag.) are not loaded and new tags cannot be saved.
* All command line options are ignored except "/a" and "/n".
* Files cannot be saved to the Alternate Startup Directory.
* Preferences cannot be saved.
* Additional features and programs will not automatically load.
Enable items that were disabled by Office Safe Mode
1. On the Help menu, click About Microsoft <application>.
2. Click Disabled Items.
3. Select the items you want to enable.
4. Click Enable.

I went in :
1. On the Help menu, click About Microsoft <application>.
2. Click Disabled Items.
3. Select the items you want to enable.
4. Click Enable.
No Items were disabled, so Im not sure what to do next.
Do you think doing a clean install of XP home and reloading everything would
be the go to fix this ?
I could use Word in safe mode but it bugs me Word not working properly

What version of Word? I am going to guess MS Worrd 2000. I had all kinds
of problems with Word 2000, I got Word 2002 and have way less trouble.
Try repairing Word. Your gonna lose some settings.
Open Add or Remove Programs...
Start | run | Type: appwiz.cpl | Click OK |
Scroll down to and click Microsoft Word | Click on the Change button |
When the Setup Wizard opens, click on Repair Word | Click the Next button |
Follow the instructions
Try starting Word with the /a switch and get rid of the Add-ins.
Start | Run | Type: winword /a | Click OK
What Is the /a Switch?
[[The /a switch is a troubleshooting tool that you can use to determine
where a problem may exist when you are working with Microsoft Word. When you
use the /a switch to start Word, the switch prevents add-ins and global

This fixed it:

For instance, try renaming Normal.dot to Normal.old – and make sure you only
