Just curious if there is any way, using only the installed OS, to determine
if the load is OEM, retail, upgrade, and so on?

From the technical point of view, these versions differ mainly regarding
their setup routines. However, "Control Panel > System > General" should
provide OEM info if applicable. This info remains when upgrading from an
OEM Home edition to a Retail Pro edition, for instance.

Right click My Computer and select properties. You should see a serial
number. It should have a designator as the third set.

How about determining if the retail was done with a full or upgrade CD?

The very bottom line of %windir%\System32\eula.txt will tell the XP version.

Paste the following line into Start | Run and click OK...

Scroll to the bottom.

EULAID:WX.4_HOM_RTL_EN

Windows XP SP1 Home Retail English
EULAID:XPSP1_RM.1_HOM_RTL_EN

Windows XP SP2 Home Retail English

Windows XP Professional Retail English
EULAID:WX.4_PRO_RTL_EN

Windows XP SP 1 Professional Retail
