Every hour while the computer is on, it tries to connect
to the internet. I found by looking at the process list
that iexplore.exe was running, and when I closed that,
the attempt to connect stopped. An hour later the
attempt is made again, with the same iexplore.exe in the
process list. I have no viruses and no adware on the
system and have gotten rid of anything in the Scheduled
Tasks that could have been responsible. What could
possibly be causing the hourly attempt to go online?

Hi, Dave.

Do you have an application that goes online to synchronize your clock every
hour?

No, it's not the clock synchronizer, I disabled that. Any other thoughts?

m.p.windoesxp.help_and_support eliminated from Follow-Up

First eliminate any scumware.
See
Dealing with Unwanted Spyware, Parasites, Toolbars and Search Engines
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each need to be updated before every use, even when just
downloaded.

If trying everything at that site does not fix the problem please post back
in the same thread.

Frank - I already do have Adaware and Spybot S&D and have run them both
several times (many many times in fact..). The problem persists. I
downloaded HijackThis as you suggested, and posted the log on the
Spywareinfo forum suggested. No replies as of yet over there... What's
next?

Frank and other interested posters -

I received instructions from BoOchan at the Spywareinfo forum who suggested
using HiJackThis to fix the following three items:

O4 - Global Startup: Search.vbs

O16 - DPF: {34805D32-AD89-469E-8503-A5666AEE4333} (RdxIE Class) -
http://207.188.7.150/0931a93eadef139f2915/netzip/RdxIE.cab

O16 - DPF: {E7DBFB6C-113A-47CF-B278-F5C6AF4DE1BD} -
http://download.abacast.com/download/files/abasetup141.cab

Well, I did that and the problem seems to have stopped! How wonderful! I
am curious, though, if you have any idea which of these was the problem,
what it was trying to do, and why?

Thanks!!

I'm not really that knowlegeable about spyware and adware since I never get
any. The kind of sites I visit don't offer it. That's why I give a
reference instead of offering a solution.

Note that Ad-Aware and Spybot S & D should both be updated before every use.
