We are in the process of upgrading some NT4 workstations to Windows XP Pro.
We are an NT4 domain
We use roaming profiles. Users roaming profiles are stored in a folder
called X. Within folder X the following subfolders are stored: Application
Data, Cookies, desktop, favorites, history, nethhood, local settings,
Personal, Printhood, recent, send to, start menu, and template.
While still as an NT4 user this X folder would be about 5 meg or less in
size.
When user converts to XP Pro, the X folder increases substatiantally in size
to almost double or triple it's original size. Specifically the Local
Settings folder jumps from a few 100 kb to over 4-6 meg in size. Within the
Local settings folder you have the following: Application Data folder,
History folder, and a desktop.ini file. The Application folder has the bulk
of space usage. Within this folder there is a large file called IconCach.db,
a Microsoft folder and another software folder. Iconcache is over 3 meg in
size, MS folder is a few meg in size, other folder is empty.
On the old NT X folder within the local settings folder there is ussually
only an Application Data folder and that would be about 2 meg in size. There
is no IconCach.db file, an the Microsoft folder is a few meg in size.
What is IconCache.db ? Why is there an Application Data folder in the X
folder and the subfolder Local Settings ? How can I fix this so our roaming
profiles don't double, triple in size ?
If we delete the local settings folder and IconCache.db, they are recreated
after the user logs in.
Although the "Application Data" folder under "Documents and Settings\Users"
and the "Application Data" folder under "Documents and Settings\Users\Local
Settings" have the same name, but content is different. "Documents and
Settings\Users\ Local Settings\Application Data" are used for private system
data such as CD-burning cache. "Documents and Settings\Users\Application
Data" are the place can be used by any applications.
These folders can't be removed including "Microsoft" under "Application
Data". They are all used by system. Since Windows XP is very different from
NT, the structure and the size of user profile is also different from NT.
This is by design
