Hi,
I just had to install the xp professional in my pc again.
I use often the standby mode.
My problem is, that after the new installation, when going to standby mode,
the fans are still working. I want the fans to shutdown.
Before the installation, going to standby mode was shutting down the fans.
The installation is from the same CD.
Board is intel DG35EC on S3 in bios power, the XP is professional with SP3.
Any idea?
TIA – Haim.

Unless you want to severely damage your computer, you do NOT want the fans
to shutdown when the machine enters Standby (though if the room's cool
enough and the computer's innards are clean*, the fans should shutdown
eventually).

Have you installed the proper motherboard chipset drivers?

First thing to do, is check the BIOS settings.

http://download.intel.com/support/motherboards/desktop/sb/biosglossarybymenu_v10.pdf

"ACPI Suspend Mode (or ACPI Suspend State)
* S1 State
* S3 State <----------------------------- You want this one.
Specifies the ACPI sleep state."

Next, check the Device Manager. Check the properties of the
"Computer" entry. It should say ACPI in the name. (Like
ACPI Multiprocessor or ACPI Uniprocessor.)

It is possible to override the HAL choice, during the installation,
but chances are you would remember doing that (i.e. pressing F5).

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc759157.aspx

You can use a copy of "dumppo.exe", in a command window, to list
the capabilities currently available in the OS.

ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/products/Oemtest/v1.1/WOSTest/Tools/Acpi/dumppo.exe

dumppo.exe admin cap

More information on dumppo, is here. Dumppo is useful for situations,
where the BIOS is set correctly, the "Computer" entry says ACPI, and
yet Standby is still not working. S3 Standby Suspend To RAM, should cause
the fans to go off.

Did you try reading this posting ? It is setting "min sleep state" to S3.
That might offer you a workaround.

An important supplemental:
Because the computer unexpectedly resumed from standby, I also had to do this:

"To work around this behavior, enable the Only allow management stations to
bring the computer out of standby option. To do this, follow these steps:

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. On the Hardware tab, click Device Manager.
3. In Device Manager, double-click Network Adapters.
4. Right-click your network adapter, and then click Properties.
5. On the Power Management tab, click to select the Allow this device to
bring the computer out of standby check box, and then click to select the
Only allow management stations to bring the computer out of standby check
box.
6. Click OK, and then close Device Manager and System Properties."
