Hello,

Running Windows XP Pro with ATI Radeon 8500 video card.

I have just moved from a 17" CRT monitor to a new 18" LCD monitor.

The text is very sharp but too small. Obviously if I select any resolution
other than the recommended the text gets larger but is very poor.

I then went to the Microsoft site on cleartype and when turned on the text
was worse. I am just using a standard VGA instead of DVI input but as the
text and graphics are very sharp I assume DVI input would not help.

I then started changing to large fonts but the fonts were not clear and on
some settings go to bold. Also the fonts were inconsistent across
applications including all Office XP Pro. Is there anything else I can try
or is it just that an 18" monitor at 1280 x 1024 is just to small? Would I
need to get a larger monitor at the same resolution or the same size monitor
with a lower native resolution.

Thanks

Have you gone into [Advanced] on the [Settings] panel and set the [DPI
Setting] to "Large Size (120 DPI)"?

Thanks Al but that is simular to large fonts. I get poor font quality, icons
in task tray etc are jagged and many fonts appear bold in software programs.
I assume it is a clash with the resolution of the monitor and the change in
font size except when I change the font size in documents etc they respond
normaly. It has me a bit puzzled.

As stated before I had done this with poor results in text and Icon display.

I had to do a lot of font changes in the display properties appearance to
get something reasonable. I am left with minor large icon loss of clarity,
not quite smooth. I am left with large system tray icons that are almost
undistiguishable and badly pixalatedl. I have tried many settings and I can
vary the size but they are still not good. The clock is fine in the task
tray.

Any ideas apreciated.

might check the manual to set the best refresh rate for the resolution you are using.
using digital input produces a much clearer picture. might consider switching to it if the monitor supports it.

In "display properties", is the monitor listed your actual flat panel
monitor? If not, use the software that came with the monitor and change the
driver, or go to the website for the suitable driver. Also, in "display
properties", "appearance" you can change to a larger font size. My tray
icons are a bit strange too, but I just put up with it. Important is that
you run the monitor at it's native resolution.

Ok I have this worked out.

You need to change the DPI as above. I chose 125% in custom.

Now system tray icons are pixelated and very difficult to view.

I was thinking it was a scaling problem and the icons could only be set to
100% so I got an idea to see if I could change this.

Go to display settings \ appearance \ advanced then select caption buttons.

See the font size and divide by the the change of DPI setting. In this case
DPI 31/1.2 gives a font near 25. Set to this font size and system tray items
almost perfect as I had to round the font size.

The only problem with this tecnique is it affects the active window font
size. The two seem linked.

My final problem that I can not work out is the large icons in explorer,
desktop etc as not smooth. I could not get them to scale. Any ideas
apreciated.

Thanks Steve,

I have done all the things suggested here. I found if run monitor at
correct resolution and change DPI setting to get my prefered size that
you just have to go Go to display settings \ appearance \ advanced
then select caption buttons.

Set this to 25 no matter what if you run a 1280 x 1024 will give
perfict icons. They will be small but clear.

Hope this helps someone.
