After upgrading from Windows 2000 to Windows XP, I noticed
that the old Windows NT Messaging (or at least remnants of
it) is still installed.

Is it safe to uninstall this component or is it still
needed? If I can safely uninstall it, how would I go
about it given that the Uninstall for this component is
not available on the Add/Remove dialog in the XP Control
Panel.

Thanks,

- Jeff

Hi Jeff,

The Windows XP integrated with the Windows Messenger.

It can be removed as the following steps.

1. notepad c:\WINDOWS\inf\sysoc.inf
2. Change this line:
"msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,hide,7"
to look like this:
"msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,,7"
(remove the word 'hide' but leave the commas)
3. Start Add/Remove Programs and uninstall Windows Messenger.

Thanks for using Microsoft News Group!

Sincerely,

Steven Liu

Hi Steven,

Thanks for your response, but I think you misunderstood my
question. I was referring to the old NT/2000 NT Messaging
component not the XP Windows Messenger component. After
upgrading to XP, I now have both the old NT Windows
Messaging and the new XP Windows Messenger components.

My question was whether I still need the old NT Messaging
component. If not, is there a way to safely uninstall
it. It's not a Windows XP component so I'd need some
other way to uninstall it.

Thanks,

- Jeff

Hi Jeff,

We can install the MSN Messenger.

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=9d5e723e-3be2-41d5-
88a4-2039a9963fcd&DisplayLang=en

Then, we can remove it in the Add/Remove Programs.

Thanks for using Microsoft News Group!

Sincerely,

Steven Liu

Hi Steven,

Is MSN Messenger related to Windows NT Messaging? I guess
what I'm asking is how, by installing and uninstalling MSN
Messenger, will Windows NT Messaging be removed?

Thanks,

- Jeff

Hi Jeff,

Actually, Windows Messaging is not supported in Windows XP:

However, we may try to install Windows Messaging for Windows 2000 package on Windows XP-based systems. Please note that it has not been
tested and is not supported.

To obtain Windows Messaging for Windows 2000 package:

If you have any concerns, please feel free to let us know.

Jacob,

Thanks for your response.

Actually, this machine has gone through two upgrades.
First from Windows NT 4.0 to Windows 2000 and, now, from
Windows 2000 to Windows XP. Maybe it was the upgrade from
NT 4.0 to Windows 2000 which did not remove Windows NT
Messaging.

In either case, I would like to remove it at this point.
Is there an uninstall somewhere I can use to remove the
software and registry entries?

Thanks,

- Jeff

Hi Jeff,

I'm confused with the problem.

In the Windows XP, we can use the 2 application:

MSN Messenger and the Windows Messenger. The Windows Messenger is
integrated with the Windows XP. The MSN Messenger can be installed on any
Windows operation system.

Do you mean the Messenger service? It's only a service not the application.
We can locate and disable it in the Services.

Thanks for using Microsoft News Group!

Sincerely,

Steven Liu

Hi Jeff,

This issue occurs because Windows does not install Windows Messaging, and
Microsoft Mail PostOffice and Mail icons are removed during an upgrade.

Obtain and install the Ntwms.exe file. To do this, visit the following
Novell Web site:
