This email count comes from hotmail or outlook express. Did you sign up for
a hotmail account to use windows messenger. If so that's where the email
count is coming from. Free dowmload, tweak ui for xp can disable the mail
count on welcome screen.

I think this email is the "Welcome to Outlook Express" one. If you don't
want to disable the new email notification on login, simply open OE and
read it.

Use TweakUI for Windows XP, one of the Microsoft Powertoys for Windows
XP.

http://www.microsoft.com/WINDOWSXP/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp

After installing TweakUI, open it, click the + to the left of Logon,
click Unread Mail and in the right pane you will see an option to Show
Unread Mail On Welcome screen (which you can uncheck to disable) as well
as other settings.
