Trying to install Win 98.

I am getting this message

Device driver not found: OEMCD001
No valid CD rom device drivers found

Windows 98 setup files were not found.

Is the computer not seeing the CD rom ?

IS there a fix ?

Thanks,
Andy

Before or after it tries to read the HD?

I've had similar experiences when the OS can't
understand the format of the HD.
Runs off the CD until it tries to boot the drive
and continue...fails.

Dry downloading a live linux CD, like puppy,
and use that to format the HD to something 98
compatible.

Unless this hardware has previously run 98 and you
have the hardware drivers, this may be an exercise
in futility.
I tried to install 98 on hardware built this decade.
Was an onion of heartache. Fix one thing and there
was another problem lurking below. I was never able
to find enough working drivers to make it run.

I got the messages after I booted from the CD.

I got messages like

Boot from hard drive
Boot from CD (which I picked)

Since I got those messages, obviously it had to have read the CD.

Hard was formated to FAT32 using Linux.

Their FAT32 may not be the same as Windows ??

Probably not worth pursuing anymore.

Dig out CD only optical drive and use it instead ?

Maybe it doesn't like the mixed CD/DVD characteristic ?

Are the storage ports set to a compatible mode
for equipment of that era ? You can't use AHCI.

I wanted the Win 98 installation because I prefer mspaint.exe over what Linux has to offer.

One computer duals boots to Win XP or Linux.

I installed Linux alone on second laptop.

But Wine will not run mspaint.exe alone without a Windows install.

I think there are hardware issues with Win 98 on a much newer computer.

Win 98 is about 18 years old while laptop is about 10 yrs old. :-)

This sounds like a DOS error message; ie: The driver for the CDROM
(OakCdrom.sys) did not load, so that MSCDEX (which runs later) is not
finding the "handle" for the device (which would be OEMCD001). I could
be wrong, but it looks that way...

I have seen USB connected CD drive be a little cranky loading W/98.
Is this IDE or something else?

Install Virtualbox on the Linux machine and run Win98 as a guest. Here
are some guides that may help:
