Why do some files I copied from a floppy disk to my hard drive have an
underscore in the extension?

(Example: zspool.dl_)

The file extension views fine in Win98SE as zspool.dll but views as above in
WinXP.

My folder options are set to view all file extensions... (No blocks are
checked for any hidden files including system files.)

Thanks!
SP

It usually means that it is a compressed file that has to be uncompressed before
you can use it. You can maybe use extract.exe on it.

Back in the old days of Windows 3.1 an install disk would have an
install.exe or setup.exe and a lot of the other files had this underscore at
the end. I always figured the install program grabbed them and renamed them
during the install and the reason for the odd names was so you could not try
and slide them in to a folder your self. Because in those days some
programs did not come with install programs you had to do it manually.

But that does not explain why you could see the full name in 98 and the odd
name in XP.

Sounds like the files need to be expanded. You can use MSCONFIG for that.
Click the Expand button on the general page. Then select the file with the
underscore in the extension part of the file name. That *should* fix up that
file for you.
