Program Button Icons Gone on Taskbar

When I start up Windows XP Home, the taskbar doesn't show
the current program icons. the only way I can see them
is with the Task Manager. I contacted McAfee for the
latest virus check and my drives came up negative for any
worm or other virus. They suggested I contact MS. Any
clues?

I bet you accidentally moved the taskbar field that shows the currently
running applications, effectively hiding one of the toolbars. Try this:

Right click on the taskbar. If "lock the taskbar" is checked, uncheck it.
Look at the taskbar. You should see one or two short vertical bars before
and after the icons on your quick start toolbar. Use your mouse to slide
these field definition bars to the right or left until you see all of your
taskbar fields. (Do this by clicking on the bar and hold the left mouse
button down as you move it.)

I have people at work that do this all the time. They accidentally
resize the task bar
so that it doesn't show. Put your cursor slowly down to the bottom of
the screen if that's where
your task bar was docked. If you see a little black arrow appear just
hold your left mouse button down and drag it up to resize your task
bar. Probably to simple to be the solution, but you never know.
