When I checked my DirectX diagnosis tool, it said the
current version was of 1998. The DirectX Version(Registry)
is 5.01.2535.0000. I have a lot of games that install the
latest DirectX (8.1). After I click the steup icon for
the installation begin, it say that installation was
successful. But when I looked back at the tool, nothing
had changed. How do I update DirectX to 8.1? Nothing I'm
doing is working.

If you are using Windows XP you already have DX8.1, it ships with the
OS...

Try going to Start/Run and type in "dxdiag" without the quotes. Then read
the information at the bottom of the resulting screen. You'll see you have
DirectX 8.1 on your system. Have you updated all your files from Windows
Update, too? Might want to do that, including Service Pack 1 which is
available for download now.

You are confusing the version of DXDIAG with the version
of DirectX. Look up 1 line.

If you read the follow-up posts in this thread, you would see the
information you're viewing isn't correct. Windows XP comes with DirectX
8.1. Go to Start/Run and type in "dxdiag" without the quotes, then click
the OK button. Read the DirectX version. What you're seeing is the tool
version, not the program version number.
