device manager access denied

not long ago, i tried to install the new nforce drivers.
but the install failed miserably, so i rolled back on new
drivers to the ones that i had before. so after some
fidiling, i found that if i used device manager to update
the drivers one at a time for all the hardware that it
would have done automatically through the install, they
installed fine. so i went ahead and installed all the
drivers. Although next boot, the IDE drivers were causing
it to crash. so i restarted again in last good config,
which put me back with the old drivers again... so once
again, i went through installing the drivers one at a time
through the device manager, not forgeting to skip the ide
drivers...
so all appeared to be going well, until i decided once
more to give the setup a go, just to make sure i didnt
miss anything (god that was stupid thing to do!) and i
figured that if it screwed up again, i could go through
the same process as before... but when it still didnt
work, and i tried to install the individual drivers,
device manager started giving me an error that read as
follows:
Cant install this hardware
there was a problem installing this hardware:
*states the name of wot ever i try*
an error occured during the installation of this device
access denied
anyone got any ideas??? i am getting really bad texture
defects throughout many games due to some of these
probs.........
