From a cold start open a new Search (Start, Search). Wait a few seconds,
Close the Search Window (Red X top right hand corner)

Does the Search Window 'linger' on your task bar?

Yes - for about 5 seconds

Thanks Mac, I don't suppose you know a fix for this abnormal behaviour?

The reason I ask, on a handful of my 500+ systems merely opening a Search
causes explorer to crash. (Data Execution Prevention catches) The only way
I've found around this problem is to:
1. Disable and Enable your Network Adapter.
2. Disable Automatically Detect Settings from Internet Explorer.
3. Change Internet Explorer's proxy settings.

Obscure Windows XP bug me thinks. I believe it is related (not sure why
though) opening Search creates a http connection to 'sc.windows.com'

open the explorer go to file Windows\Inf .
find the file called srchasst.inf and right click on/install (maybe ask the
xp cd rom)
Note: the file Windows\Inf is high (in opctions file/see/check show high
files)

Insted of high, I think that you meant hidden.

I could see there might have been a translation problem. ;-)
