Ok, so, I have StyleXP. and I downloaded a bunch of Visual Styles from
www.themexp.org. Only, when I unzipped them, all they have is an msstyles
file. No Theme. I unzipped the msstyles file into a folder with the same
name as the file in Windows\resources\themes. but it's not showing up in the
themes or appearances list, and when I click on the file itself, it opens
the appearances thing, but it is NOT showing up correctly. and it;s not just
on one file, it's a number of different ones. So what am I doing wrong?

In article <#yXTS9EqBHA.2172@tkmsftngp03>, helwi...@yahoo.com says...
You're doing nothing wrong. For some reason, StyleXP doesn't seem to
work properly sometimes. You need to restart your computer, browse to
the themes folder and double click on one of the msstyles files. It
should then show up properly in the list of available themes.

Ok, I rebooted, clicked the file, and it is still now showing up right. I'm
about ready to say fuggedaboutit and just get MS Plus. Will the msstyles I
have DLed work with Plus?

Plus gives you 4 extra themes. You want to pay $40 for that? It's a
joke. Your downloaded themes will not work just because you install
Plus. There is probably something wrong with your video card that
causes the preview not to work. You might be able to get an updated
driver. At any rate, double click on one of the .msstyle files, then
Apply the style even though you can't see the preview. This should
work fine. And all of your styles can be free.

You might also be interested in trying out windowblinds. The styles
are more unique than what you get with stylexp. Go to windowblinds.com
for the program, and wincustomize.com for free skins. I like the
mettalic skins, and check out the aquarium skin.

I appreciate you looking out for my cash flow, but it's quite unnecessary. I
agree that $40 is too much, and was planning to buy a used copy. And I know
that Plus won't make the themes that are not working work, but I want to
know if the .msstyles that ARE working will continue to work with plus. My
video card is fine, it's not the preview that is messed up, it is the
styles. or the StyleXP program, I dunno. I did click on the files, it did
NOT work. When I apply the styles, it either reverts back to the default
blue scheme, or switches over to Windows Classic. I tried window blinds, I
originally liked StyleXP better. now that it is not working, I may give
windowblinds another shot, but StyleXP had more themes I liked. Windows
Blinds seemed to not have much of a selection of purple themes, which is
what I want, while StyleXP has a Purple and Black theme I quite like. So I
wanted to get Style XP to work.

OK, here we go!!!! With the style files that u download, most will not have
a *.theme file included. If there isn't one, unzip the *msstyle file, along
with all other files included in the ZIP, to a subfolder of
Windows\Resources\Themes. Some downloaded files will have the path included
in the ZIP. If so, be sure not to extract the files into a second sublevel
of the Themes folder. By this, I mean to be sure that the files are
extracted into C:\Windows\Resources\Themes\Zebra and not
C:\Windows\Resources\Themes\Zebra\Zebra if you downloaded a style called
Zebra. After the extraction, browse to the folder you extracted to and
dbl-click on the *msstyle file. This should bring up the Display Properties
and show the style. If the Downloaded file included a wallpaper, browse to
that wallpaper via the Desktop tab. Once you have your Windows customized
the way you want it using the *Style you downloaded, go to the Theme tab and
save the theme in the Resources\Themes folder using a name you will
remember. Always give it a .theme extension!!! Once you have done this, the
Theme will be listed in the Theme drop-box each time you go into Display
Properties. Enjoy and I hope I've helped a bit.

i know the problem you're having. i went through it as
well. what you need to do is uninstall stylesxp & then do
a system restore to just before you got it. if it's not
possible then don't worry about it. it's just better to
do it that way. after that go & download stylexp again.
once you install make sure you choose the option to
select toothpaste to test it. once it's on go to your
windows\resources\themes & double click one of the
msstyles that you downloaded. remember to do this for
every one you download. it's the only way to be sure that
it will work. you may even want to delete the downloaded
msstyles before you reinstall just to be sure. this
worked great for me & now i enjoy more than 15 different
themes.(lost count last week)windowsblinds suck. don't
waste your time with that.

Actually, I just rebooted, and then went through clicking on each msstyles
file while I wasn't online, and didn't have a bunch of other stuff running,
and now all are working, except a few that I think the person who made them
messed up.

If you decide to give windowblinds another try, pick up the
metaalic-colros theme. It includes purple. I'm using the green version
and am very happy with it.
Also, now that stylexp is working for you, download the OSX 1.5 theme.
This one really is a theme and includes the very nice OSX cursors.
After installing the theme, if you want to go back to one of the other
styles, but keep the cursors, just double click on the msstyles file
and apply it. That's what I have done. So I always have the OSX
cursors, but I can change themes either using windowblinds or stylexp.

I did a search for OSX and came up with about 7 different results. which did
you mean? And I got the z3r0s theme, which has a number of different colors,
and cursors to match each.
