Hi all,
I was wondering if there is a way I can just disable Windows Messenger.
Every time I open up Outlook or when I boot the bloody thing starts up.

I'd like to just disable it completely or even remove it, whatever works.

Thanks in advance for any help,
Ryan

There's been many web pages about this. You have to access the hidden file
'sysoc.inf', and remove the attribute 'hide' from something that looks
similar to windows messenger. then search the add/remove windows conponents
control panel for windows messenger, and just uninstall. If I'm too vague,
search the web for the answer.

The way i did it was to close Microsoft Messenger, and then go to program
files\messenger and rename msmsgs.exe to msmsgs-broke.exe

It doesn't startup, and nothing complains.

Open C:\WINDOWS\inf\sysoc.inf and change
msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,hide,7 to
msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,7

Then use Add/Remove Windows Components to remove messenger.

1. Messenger, tools menu, Options uncheck the item for start at windows
start
2. Messenger, tools menu, Options uncheck the item for run in background

3. OE, Tools menu, Options, uncheck run Messenger at startup
4. Disable or don't open the 'contacts' pane in IE, and OE
(OE, View menu, "customize toolbar", uncheck 'contacts bar')

and .

And if after uninstalling MSN Explorer, you still see MSN Messenger, try
this.

Look under your windows dir (using search) for sysoc.inf. In it is a list of
things that show up (or don't) under add/remove programs. In any line that
you see the word "hide" between two commas, that item won't show.

Look for a line that begins with msmsgs=
In that line, find and delete the word hide (don't delete any commas
though). It should look like this - msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,,7

close and save sysoc.inf and restart your computer. You will then be able to
remove msn messenger from the windows components part of add/remove. Top
level too - you won't have to hunt, just scroll down.

If you're running Pro, you can use GPEDIT.MSC to prevent Messenger from loading. Otherwise, even disabling it in startup won't cause it to "always" not run. Outlook, OE and some MS web pages can still make it load.

1) Start, Run and enter GPEDIT.MSC
2) Computer Configuration, Adminstrative Templates, Windows Components, Windows Messenger
3) You can now modify whether it starts initially and/or whether its to run at all.

I have been watching for that solution myself. No-one can disable all of
them. I agree they are very annoying. Especially in Internet Explorer
Favorites.
