In Win XP Home, it seems that the list that appears when you r-click a
file and choose 'Open With...' is limited to 9. One drops off without
warning if you exceed that (by choosing Browse to select a new one).

Does anyone know if there is a simple, risk-free way of increasing
that permanently please? Ideally I'm hoping there's a registry entry
in which '9' can be modified to say '12' or whatever.

The AVI type is what prompted this post, but several of my file types
can usefully be opened in more than 9 programs.

Excellent, thanks John. OpenExpert looks exactly what I was after.
I've added a couple of extra progs for AVI, and my Open With list now
has 11 entries. Of course, I have yet to see if they survive a reboot,
but I'm hopeful!

I fail to see how that helps anything; you're still limited to 9 choices
where the OP is asking about I'm pretty sure.

Besides, to add more choices to the XP Open With right click context meny,
whenever you use Open With, that file will be added to the list of available
files? You don't need an app to do that.
But I don't think that's what the OP is asking about. He wants the list
of Recently Opened Files under the File menu to be larger than 9. I don't
believe that can be changed.

Eh? Didn't you read my quote? "I've added a couple of extra progs for

And the statement in your second paragraph is nonsense! As is apparent
from simply reading my original post.

The issue has nothing to do with "Recently Opened Files"!

In short, the program works a treat. It's the only way I've so far
discovered of achieving what I described. My thanks again to John for
the lead.
