I would like to know where XP keeps the icons.

A friend has installed some alternative desktop and this has changed the
icons. It DOES have an option to change the icon, however when you click
"Browse"...where do you go to???

I cannot find any "Ico" files for many applications, so I assume that XP has
put them somewhere.

also, most applications have their icon contained within the executable. Other dlls contain icons as well -- networking icons in netshell.dll, older icons in moricons.dll...

You just have to go exploring with the browse button.

John:

"Icon Snatcher" (version 3.6.1) is a great freeware program that extracts
icons from exe and dll files. You can save each icon as a bitmap (bmp),
icon (ico), or gif file. For example, there are over 200 standard Win XP
icons in the shell32.dll file in the Windows\System32 folder.
