change default desktop font

not for the desktop text (e.g. shortcut names) or window text of Windows
utilities (e.g. Control Panel). I think the default is Verdana, which is
pleasant enough, but I'd like to change it. Surely there is a way?
The reason, in case anyone is curious, is that I tried to copy my fonts onto
a CD to take to another computer. But there was a problem with the burn, I
guess, and now I have the temporary folder in limbo in the CD writing
wizard. I can't delete it, because it contains fonts that are currently in
use (i.e. to display the text on the screen of the CD writing wizard...). I
opened the folder and deleted all of the fonts not in use, but it's still
hung on Verdana. Basically, CD writing is disabled until I get this problem
solved, because these files are in the queue but can't be deleted or copied.
(I later figured out that I needed to first make a copy of the windows/fonts
folder so that I could unprotect it and burn from that, but unfortunately
that still leaves me with the present problem.)
Anyway, my strategy is to temporarily change the font that Windows is using
for all of this background text, so that it will be "released" and then I
can delete the temp folder in the CD writing wizard and get on with my life.

There isn't actually any text on the desktop. The text is for the icons on
the desktop.
Right click on a space on the desktop and select properties.
Go to appearance and select advanced.
Select Icon under the Item drop down down box and you should be able to
change the font and font size here.

type that was using that font, but it did eventually work, and now I have
things back to normal. Maybe system restore would have been quicker, but at
least it's done now.
