deleting desktop backgrounds

How do you delete desktop backgrounds from the drop down list.
All the pictures I have saved in My Pictures are automatically being sent to
the desktop background list and there are too many in there.

Do you mean where did I get the pictures from?
They are either from my digital camera, scanned pictures or off the internet.

If you mean where does the list come from. It is the list when you right
click on the desktop background, go to properties and then click desktop.
Under that tab there is a list of available backgrounds that you can change
it to.

I was able to find out that if I deleted all the pictures from "My Pictures"
they went away but I don't want to do that.

That's how Windows XP works. Move pictures that you don't want in list into
a sub-folder.
You do not have to store into My Pictures
