I am sharing MSDOS 6.22 and Win XP's boot files on my first partition. I've
been trying to get rid off the Win XP's boot loader with FDISK /MBR but no
results. It just comes back again; although it gave results with other boot
loaders (it just cleared them). What else can I try in order to boot
directly to my MSDOS?
You would probably ask yourself why do I want to do it. I just want to boot
my win xp from another primary partititon, not from the curent one.

You could have a dual boot option in boot.ini which lets
you select the OS you wish to boot into. In this case,
the boot loader of XP resides in the same partition as
DOS, though the complete installation can reside on
a seperate partition.

The other possibility is to get a third party software that
allows you to create two primary partitions, then you
can have two completely seperate OS installations.

The boot strap code for the XP partition is stored in your DOS partition
assuming that was the active partition at the time you began the XP install.
You can replace it, but as soon as you do, you'll loose the ability to fire
up XP until you restore the boot strap code.

If you're really and truly serious just sys the drive and that way you'll
have to jump through hoops to get back into XP. You'll have to use recovery
console from the XP CD to get back into XP and once done, you can sys the
drive again to take XP totally out of the loop. Be forewarned though that if
you have an OEM distro of XP you might not have RC and if that's the case,
you'll simply have to reinstall XP every time.

Personally, I'd just leave things alone.

Which boot manager do you want to use instead of the NT loader? DOS has
no multi-boot capability.

Well, it's XOSL.

So, you're saying SYS C: from my DOS patition would do the job (clear up the
XP loader) from the primary partition. It's OK if loose the ability to boot
from that primary partition. As I said, I want to move the boot loader on
another primary partition anyway.

XOSL should pre-empt the NT loader. But XOSL will have to be able to
install the NT Loader or you will have to manually install NTLDR and
NTDETECT.COM on whichever partition you want XOSL to boot. And you may
have to boot to the Recovery Console to "fixboot" and rewrite the boot
sector on that partition. Then a simple boot.ini file should do:

[boot loader]
timeout=5
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(n)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(n)\WINDOWS="Windows XP" /fastdetect

where "n" is determined by the partition number in the MBR as set by
XOSL. XP will probably see %windir% on C: and if it was on D: before,
you might want to change the drive letter.

It seems like a lot of trouble after the fact.

Boot from diskette. Insure the DOS partition is active then sys the drive.
You'll now have an interesting time getting XP to boot, but....
