How can I turn off those annoying pop-ups? I'm running
Windows XP on a constantly connected cable line. It's
great to have instant acces - Poof and your there.
However it's really getting annoying. While I'm trying
to do my homework in Word or whatever they just won't
stop. During the time I typed this I had at least 6 of
the things pop-up.

Are you talking about internet pop-ups or the little balloon tips pop-ups?

If you are mentioning about the browser popup ads, there
is a way to disable the pop-ups and ADs.

Blocking pop-ups in browser
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/using/howto/restricteds
ites/stoppopups.asp

Blocking ADS in browser: (using HOSTS file)
This always works great.
http://accs-net.com/hostess/

Next, as you are using always-on connection, i recommend
using an firewall applications such as zone alarm which
can also be used to block ads as well.

Hi Harvey,

Go to Start/Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Services. Double click the
Messenger Service and change Automatic to Disabled, then click the Stop
button.

Or use this automated edit:

Try using AdShield (I think it is http://www.adshield.org/) which integrates nicely with IE (not sure about NS or others).
You can block many unwanted ads too.

Go to AnalogX.com and get POW. This way you dont eliminate the banks pop ups
when you are banking online. This is a program that you program and you only
eliminate the pop ups you dont want. and they never come back unless you
remove that pop ups address from the list of banned pop ups.

Honestly, it depends on what kind of popups you are getting...

There are three possible types that you are getting:
-adware popups
-web popups
-messenger service popups

Since you are using word, and not surfing the web, it is not web
popups.
If these are full color internet explorer windows, then you are
getting adware popups. The best program Ive found for stopping all
three of these is PopUp Inspector. It costs $19 but it is worth every
penny. It makes using the computer and surfing the web the way it
used to be - before popups and spam. beyond that, you can try using
Ad-Aware by lavasoft to remove any adware you have on your computer...
That will help too, but not with messenger or web popups.

Try them out...
